We had another great session last week for the eighth week of our Energy Academy, focused on energy efficiency, heat pumps and weatherization. Thank you to our expert speakers: Bobuchi Ken-Opurum, Ph.D., ENV SP, Research Director at the Building Electrification Institute (BEI) and Todd McAlister, Executive Director of SPEER. The group addressed common energy efficiency misconceptions, beginning with the prevalent belief that it's solely a summer concern. Contrary to this, Texas faces high energy demand in winter due to inefficient heating systems, which strains the power grid. Discussions delved into the energy burden on low and moderate-income (LMI) households in Texas, highlighting the significant impact of high utility bills on families forced to make difficult financial trade-offs to maintain electricity. The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) was highlighted as a solution, offering energy efficiency upgrades to LMI households to reduce consumption and lower bills. Additionally, the group shared information about heat pump benefits and demand response programs. The session concluded by exploring legislative opportunities for advancing energy efficiency initiatives. The Energy Academy is dedicated to equipping legislative staff with the knowledge needed to shape evidence-based energy policies. Our next session is scheduled for October 3, focusing on "Safe & Sustainable Baseload Nuclear Energy" with Rusty Towell and Derek Haas.
