The 2024 National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE) Annual Meeting of the National Association of Waterfront Employers, held November 13-15 in Puerto Rico, highlighted the electrification of port equipment. As part of the event, NAWE invited three companies to present a case study on electric port equipment currently operating at the Port of Los Angeles. Lisa Lillelund of Proterra, Spencer Pope of Taylor Machine Works, Inc., and Dave Turner of Yusen Terminals LLC participated in a panel?discussing real-world performance of the first fleet size deployment of battery electric container handlers. Proterra is powering the nation’s first?commercially available?electric Taylor Machine Works ZLC Container Handlers, operating at Yusen Terminal in the Port of Los Angeles. The Taylor ZLC Container Handlers, supported by funding from the California Air Resources Board and the California CORE program, operate?two full work shifts?on a single charge, efficiently unloading and stacking 40-foot containers up to six-high. This transition to electric equipment supports the Port of Los Angeles' goal of adopting clean technology to create a more sustainable future. We’re excited to see Los Angeles and other ports receive funding from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Ports Funding and look forward to the positive impact it will have in advancing the future of port electrification.

Proterra batteries are equipped with Passive Propagation Resistance (PPR), a core safety feature that enhances the overall reliability and performance of our battery systems. ?? PPR works by ensuring that, in the rare event of a single cell issue, it remains isolated within that cell, without impacting the surrounding cells. By integrating PPR, we provide a safe and reliable solution that supports the seamless operation into commercial vehicles and industrial equipment. #batterysafety #electrification
