Great news out of #Saskatchewan! The new Bekevar Wind Energy Facility north of Moose Mountain Provincial Park is now online. The wind facility will provide up to 200 megawatts (MW) of emissions-free power to the grid, powering up to 100,000 homes. Kudos to CanREA member SaskPower on their 25-year power purchase agreement, and to CanREA Terawatt member RES for working alongside this project to deliver tangible benefits to the Cowessess First Nation. Hydro Québec is about to launch a major undertaking to upgrade this #transmission system. The first phase will include the optimization of the existing system and the construction of almost 850km of new 735-kV or 315-kV lines, as well as 5 strategic new substations in 3 areas. This infrastructure will allow new #generation to be integrated into the #grid, transmit additional energy across Québec and increase grid #reliability and #resilience to increasingly intense weather phenomena. https://lnkd.in/gDsPGfhP

A report released by Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development Jerry?V.?DeMarco concluded that Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Crown?Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, and Indigenous Services Canada’s failure to fully execute their departmental plans limited their contribution to Canada’s clean power generation and energy efficiency targets in the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. The evolv1 building in the University of Waterloo Research and Technology Park in Waterloo, Ontario, has become self-sufficient in electricity following the installation of an innovative DC-optimized rooftop and carport solar system. Over a three year period, the system offset 105% of the facility’s energy use and saved approximately $360,000 in energy costs. VCT Group designed and installed a combined system, including a rooftop and parking lot canopies, totalling 768kW. The canopies are multifunctional, featuring modules that capture solar energy while providing shade for vehicles, adding aesthetic appeal to the space.? According to a new annual forecast from the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), electricity demand in Ontario is anticipated to grow 75 per cent by 2050, higher than previously forecast, with annual consumption rising from 151 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025 to 263 TWh in 2050. The accelerated pace of demand growth in this year’s forecast is primarily attributed to the industrial sector, which includes additional electric vehicle supply chain manufacturing; and energy-intensive data centres, a trend that is quickly emerging around the world to support the proliferation of artificial intelligence. #datacentres #AI #EVs #electrification #energydemand https://lnkd.in/gHCYhDRc

In its Decision issued today in proceeding M11621 – “Smart Grid Atlantic” – and in accordance with the recommendation from Solar Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board has directed Nova Scotia Power to: “Develop a “Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Integration Roadmap” in consultation with stakeholders to identify opportunities to optimize how DERs are integrated into, and participate in, the power system; and to better enable customer-sited energy storage to not only serve on-site loads, but to also export to the grid, when they have additional capacity beyond meeting their own needs.” These initiatives will elevate and accelerate the role of households, businesses, and communities in supporting the province’s clean electric future. “Behind-the-meter” technologies such as solar, batteries, and electric vehicle chargers are now on a fast-track to becoming front-and-centre energy resources in NS.
