This Black History Month #ThrowBackThursday I want to uplift Maggie Lena Walker. She is another MAJOR Black Business Baddie who Broke Many Boundaries. What I find the most inspiring about her life and legacy though, was her charter of the first Black woman owned bank in the U.S – the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, AND her creation of the St. Luke's Herald newspaper. Money + Information Systems = Power! She GOT WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT. AAAAAND, her bank served the Richmond Area for OVER 100 YEARS! BOOM!!!!!! PUT SOME RESPECT ON HER NAME! MAGGIE LENA WALKER. This is an example of one of the many community events I've designed to build real community engagement and people power. For the past two years, I've been supporting a coalition with organizing canvasses and public events to talk about what services and programs are needed in our schools and communities so that everyone can thrive. We help people build relationships with the right people between nonprofits, schools, businesses, and organizations, and map what resources are available to manifest collective visions. This woman right here is one of my biggest heroes. Her name is Mary Ellen Pleasant. She was born in 1814 - at a time when democracy in America was limited to the wealthy and landowning white men and chattel slavery was in full swing. In these nasty ass conditions, she was instrumental in expanding the Underground Railroad out west, made her way to California during the Gold Rush, supported other women and fugitive slaves with teaching them how to become self-sufficient and set up businesses. She even funded John Brown's famous revolt in Harper's Ferry. She dropped $30K in 1859, YO! I wish I could donate $30K to a cause I truly believed in NOW. Don't you?
