Powell & Stokes Powell & Stokes began in 1919 as a partnership between brothers-in-law William Luther Powell and Jonathan Tayloe Stokes. The partnership began as a fertilizer company but soon expanded to include the buying of peanuts and cotton. The operation was originally situated in a warehouse on the Cashie River in Windsor and shipped peanuts on barges. The fertilizer also came in via barge in 200-pound burlap bags. In 1935, Powell & Stokes moved to a new facility on King Street. There they had built a new warehouse that was used for more than 40 years. Then, in 1978, Powell & Stokes moved to its current location north of Windsor on U.S. 13. Bertie County Peanuts Bertie County Peanuts was launched in 1992 in Windsor, North Carolina, by Powell & Stokes, Inc. Powell & Stokes is a farm supply and bulk peanut buying company that was founded in 1919 by the Powell and Stokes families. The families have been producing peanuts since at least 1898. Bertie County Peanuts was founded on the simple principal that consumers deserve only the best peanut product. Thus, the company produces peanut products that are made only from Super Extra Large Virginia type peanuts. Super Extra Large peanuts are the largest peanuts on the retail market and because of their size and taste are considered a true gourmet peanut. The peanuts used by Bertie County Peanuts are locally grown, and then packaged in recyclable plastic jars so that the products are visible to the consumer.
