In our research with maslansky + partners and We Mean Business Coalition, we found that investors and consumers are highly supportive of companies talking about their climate-related efforts — when they talk about it in the right way. Instead of positioning it as a moral or political issue, companies should focus on the material business case for climate initiatives. It’s time to re-frame corporate climate messaging - with a focus on materiality, not morality. Potential Energy wanted to understand from investors and consumers what they expect from businesses related to climate. The data says that they are in fact very supportive of companies talking about climate change, but it helps to talk about it the right way. To appeal to the broadest set of stakeholders, businesses must emphasize that a responsible business is a successful business. In other words, businesses invest in climate-related efforts not just because they’re good, but because they’re good for business. Hurricane Helene has left catastrophic damage in communities up and down the East Coast. These weather events are not natural, and are harming the people and places we love. When talking about these events, research we conducted earlier this summer shows that using the phrase “unnatural disasters” to describe extreme weather events is twice as effective at helping people make the connection to climate change and carbon pollution as using the phrase “extreme weather” alone.
