Overall, liquefaction fees for U.S. LNG projects are on a path to rise above $2.50/mmBtu due to a tight labor market, rising construction costs and stubbornly elevated interest rates, brokerage Poten and Partners said in a recent report to clients. Higher liquefaction fees could hurt the cost-competitiveness of U.S. LNG projects, especially if coupled with an increase in U.S. natural gas prices and or a drop in Brent crude oil prices, Poten warned. "On top of a labor shortage, inflation is driving up the price of equipment and materials," Poten said. Reuters https://hubs.ly/Q03bngMK0

In its most recent Tanker Opinion, Poten and Partners says that, based on data from freight pricing portal Vortexa, tankers made an estimated 12,108 U.S port calls in 2024 “We don’t know how many of these calls were made by Chinese operators or operators with Chinese built vessels in their fleet or operators with newbuildings on order at Chinese shipyards,” says Poten. “However, if we take a look at the current tanker fleet and the orderbook, we can get a general feel for the numbers. https://hubs.ly/Q039f5VH0

According to Poten & Partners Group, the global fleet of LNG carriers with a carrying capacity of more than 100,000 cubic meters as of December 31, 2024, included 668 vessels, with another 330 on order. Forecasts for 2025 indicate that a total of 102 new LNG vessels are expected to be delivered, reflecting increased demand and market needs. In addition, significant reference is made to the increase in LNG trading and the need for new and more efficient ship technologies to meet market demands. These developments may lead to additional orders for new LNG carriers, as well as adjustments to the existing fleet. The oldest and least efficient ships, according to Poten estimates, could be withdrawn from the market or converted into floating storage and regasification units (FSRU), offering new possibilities in the field of gas storage and transportation.
