PAPAS is on a mission to create better tools and strategies to fight one of the most destructive pests affecting potato crops: plant-parasitic nematodes. Our team of scientists, nematologists, plant pathologists, and researchers collaborate globally to address the industry-wide challenges in fighting potato nematodes. The long-term goal of PAPAS is to develop multiple proven methods to better control plant-parasitic nematodes and reduce their economic damage in potato crops. This project supports ongoing eradication efforts for potato cyst nematode in Idaho and New York while also strengthening global confidence in the U.S. potato industry. The specific objectives of our USDA NIFA-funded project include: Deploying improved diagnostics and predictive models to provide growers with decision support and economic thresholds for potato nematodes. Accelerating development of commercial potato varieties with nematode resistance through traditional breeding methods. Exploring novel nematicide production from compounds of litchi tomato (Solanum sisymbriifolium). Delivering information to the industry for more effective, sustainable nematode management and more productive potato crops.

"For almost 25 years, U.S. potato growers faced the Sisyphean task of trying to gain full market access for U.S. fresh potatoes in Mexico," writes NPC's Kam Quarles. "Any time we thought we were close to finalizing a permanent, lasting deal, a new regulatory or legal hurdle was thrown in our way to force us to restart from the bottom of the hill. "Now, as we look behind us and remember the battles that brought us where we are today, the Mexican market presents an exciting and growing opportunity for the U.S. potato industry." To accelerate development of #potato varieties with nematode resistance, PAPAS researchers develop and evaluate the use of molecular markers in breeding. ?? Breeding programs in Idaho, New York, Oregon, and Washington screened select clones for potato cyst nematode resistance genes. ?? A cross between resistant ‘Eden’ and susceptible ‘Western Russet’ identified genomic regions associated with reduced cyst number and reduced eggs/cyst. ?? These findings help identify parents for subsequence crossing, as well as clones for advancement. The Aberdeen Research and Extension Center is home to multiple potato research projects, including the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and University of Idaho potato breeding program. Litchi tomato (Solanum sisymbriifolium; AKA sticky nightshade) shows promise as an alternative to synthetic chemical nematicides for control of potato nematodes. ?? This plant is highly resistant to potato cyst nematodes (Globodera spp.) and several root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). Using different solvents and extraction techniques, PAPAS researchers analyze the plant’s genes and chemicals for potential nematicidal compounds, as well as nematode-resistant potato varieties. ??
