'You are so hard on yourself...' That is what a mum friend of mine said as we dropped our daughters to school this morning. I had been criticising my role as Founder. How I didn't feel I was financially contributing to the household enough. How I hadn't achieved what I thought I would with Postpartum Plan. How I felt like a bit of an entrepreneur imposter. How I had not been accepted into a recent Investor Round. How I was basically part mum, part businesswoman and felt like I was 'floating'. She then turned to me and said 'this is what I see... A woman who has built an award winning business FROM SCRATCH in an area that needs support. A woman with a business that has helped hundreds of parents with their emotional and physical recovery. A woman that runs her own business and still volunteers for class rep in her kids class. A woman who juggles a business and is there to pick up the kids from school. And then I realised how us female entrepreneurs judge ourselves. How we can't see the joy and success through the daily grind sometimes because we have spent our lives reading magazines about the 'top 10 days to be a better woman'... I had the honour of being part of shaping the Birth Trauma Inquiry and policy for how government, the NHS and companies can support parents after birth trauma. The report event on Monday included the Secretary of Health and Theo Clarke MP speaking about the importance of this report and promising that change would be made.? ? What does this report mean for your company? There are a few key findings that relate directly to corporate companies and how you can support your working parents. If you are not already offering Postpartum Plan to your employees now is the time to speak to us.? ? 1. 'Provide support for fathers and ensure nominated birth partner is continuously informed and updated during labour and post-delivery.' ? Postpartum Plan is for ALL parents. One partner company Fieldfisher provides our services to all parents and some of the best feedback has been from dads and partners.? ? 2. 'NIHR to commission research on the economic impact of birth trauma and injuries, including factors such as women delaying returning to work.' ? This is something I have spoken about for a long time. Yes, parents leave the workforce because of childcare costs but many times it is returning to work with a dis-regulated nervous system due to lack of proper recovery postpartum that makes them feel that they cannot cope at work. Postpartum Plan provides that education and recovery support all the way to back to work with back to work coaching.? ? 3. 'Provide universal access to specialist maternal mental health services across the UK to end the postcode lottery.' ? It was an honour to be at the Birth Trauma Inquiry report event last night with Theo Clarke MP and all the others who were part of shaping the 12 point report: Listen to Mums: Ending the postcode lottery on perinatal care. I listened to stories of trauma and injury, to the Secretary of Health promise her support and to Theo Clarke MP thank her husband for ensuring that ALL parents were included in the report. I was moved by the passion in the room and how many people are affected by birth injury and trauma in our society. I spoke to the press yesterday about my own birth trauma in 2016 and still cried; trauma leaves a forever imprint in your body. Our vision has always been to revolutionise postpartum care in our society and, with this report, I feel we have taken a big step in the right direction. I gave my thoughts on how corporates can support society with enhanced parental leave policies and benefits such as Postpartum Plan and I am proud that companies like Hertility Fieldfisher and Lansons | Team Farner were way ahead of the media curve by signing up to Postpartum Plan in 2022. I will continue to use my voice to raise awareness of postpartum health and hope that Postpartum Plan can support hundreds more parents with their emotional and physical recovery. I did a big thing this week. I met with Theo Clarke MP in Westminster to speak about the cross-party Birth Trauma enquiry. We talked about Theo Clarke MP own birth trauma and the changes that need to be made in our society to shift the narrative around birth and postpartum. I got to say what I think the government can and should do to focus more on parents' emotional and physical recovery postpartum AND offered my support to the enquiry. And I got to explain how Postpartum Plan is supporting new parents across the UK with its 5 pillars: Movement, Mindset, Nutrition, Recovery and Reflection. Postpartum Plan mission is to revolutionise postpartum care and this was a big step in that direction. I will let you know how we get on.
