Together, one person at a time, we prepare diverse health care professionals to provide better care and access for all.

关于我们

?If we want healthcare providers from diverse backgrounds, we must help create them.? We provide comprehensive support and individualized planning for students who are applying to medical professional schools (e.g., MD/DO, Dental, PA, OT/PT, Veterinary). Three of our faculty advisors have experience on admission committees, so we can ensure students have access to the vital components of successful applications and interviews. Rigorous science courses, MCAT classes and classes on how to gain needed experiences and how to apply are offered every quarter. To have health professionals that reflect our communities and improve health equity, we must provide the resources and skills they need to be accepted. Our students have grit, determination to succeed and are pursuing graduate education because despite unbelievable odds, they have dared to dream. We want to join hands with people and places that will send a consistent welcoming message that you not only want them, but value them for who they were, who they are and who they will become. If you are interested, please reach out.

  • We have recently entered into an amazing Mentoring partnership with the Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Washington. A huge shout out to Dr. Nathalia Jimenez M.D., MPH Vice Chair for Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion and Jaelen Barrett M.Ed Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Specialist Extraordinaire for the perfect matching of 25 of our premed students with amazing mentors in the Anesthesiology department and beyond. I have been included in some of the Mentee/Mentor early communications and it is great to see the excitement and quick responses on both sides. Many of our students were nervous after a quick google search showed what their mentor had accomplished, but the welcoming tone of the emails and the offers to meet for coffee and over zoom within the week quickly put everyone at ease. I am so glad we were able to make this happen. Exciting things to come! #premed #pre-med #postbacc #post-bacc #Shorelinecommunitycollege #diypostbacc #UWanesthesiology #nathaliajimenez #Jaelenbarrett

Why did our “Assume That I Can” campaign go viral? Firstly, I believe many people resonated with the message and, by sharing the campaign, wanted to help shatter prejudices and change perceptions of people with Down syndrome. However, I also think there are a few less evident — and sometimes executional— reasons. Here’s my take: - We adhered to the crucial rule: "Hook the audience from the very first seconds." Our film begins with the actress Madison Tevlin staring powerfully into the camera and saying something unexpected from a person with Down syndrome: "Hey bartender!" This grabs attention immediately, making people curious about what happens next. - The film maintains a fast pace through a dynamic combination of acting, direction, editing, and music. This keeps viewers engaged and prevents boredom, ensuring they watch until the end. - Madison discusses topics like alcohol and sex. And she swears! This isn’t done for shock value but to reinforce the campaign's message and break more taboos (even within the community). But again, it’s something unexpected from a person with Down syndrome, which makes it more impactful. - The insight is relatable to many people, even those outside the Down syndrome community, prompting them to share it. - Since it's a campaign for a charity, people are more inclined to share it as there’s no for-profit brand behind it. - Lastly, we created a vertical version for TikTok and Instagram. While this may be challenging for those who love horizontal formats, vertical content is arguably more effective on these platforms. #AssumeThatICan #SmallTheAgency SMALL

  • Last night we had our first annual Postbacc acceptance celebration, and it made me think about the different ways Postbacc programs can measure success. We can talk about our 79% acceptance rate and how demographically it mirrors the students who come into our program. Roughly 64% are mixed race/BIPOC and 50% are first generation college students. Or we can look at the fact that many of the 79% were accepted to multiple graduate programs and some will move out of state to attend the school they ultimately selected. But for me, it is the inner growth and self confidence that exudes from within right before they apply. It is one of the main reasons they are able to succeed. When I first meet them, they often hide their long road traveled of opposition and hardship not realizing it is a story that shows the grit and resilience that is required to be a strong applicant. Last night I was filled with pride. I wasn’t just proud they were all accepted, I was proud they stood up in a room filled with family and friends, faculty and fellow students to share their journey of not only what they achieved but how far they have come. The stories of long roads traveled filled the evening. We also have career changers who received high marks during their undergrad at top universities including Harvard, Stanford and West Point. And many students indicate that our supportive Professors and the collaborative Postbacc community is what sets us apart. We are not just a Cohort- We are a collaborative group of almost 200 students who come together to provide each other with support and academic assistance. I tell prospective students- whoever you are, we will help you find your people here. Hector shared “the level of effort and support I received is something I’ve never experienced before. I’m truly grateful for it.”?We build community one person and one connection at a time. To the point that community college is not as rigorous as a 4-year university, Jonathan suggests that if you think community college is easy, you should join him in a Chemistry or Physics class. I myself, would probably need 3 tutors to do that. Not only the students, but many parents shared the Postbacc program at Shoreline has been life changing. Instead, I would say that we provided a community that gave them the confidence they needed to change their own life.?And we were lucky to have a front row seat. #diypostbacc #postbacc #PostBacc #premed #predental #postbaccalaureate #Shorelinecommunitycollege

  • In March, a Postbacc student asked if there was a way the students could do poster presentations and publish their research. Geun Woo (Albert) had already published his research, but he wanted his fellow Postbacc students to have the opportunity. Seeing all of the enthusiasm, we made it happen two months later. At the Open house for the Cedar Building, the students presented their research to 200 people and thanks to Shoreline staff, they will have it published as well. These experiences are important to Medical/Dental School and Physician Assistant, PT/OT applications. Community colleges provide the support, financial assistance and individual guidance to make things like this happen. #GeunWooOh #postbacc #postbac #shorelinecommunitycollege #premed #predental #physicianassistant #PT #OT

HBCUs continue to do the heavy lifting of educating this country’s future Black physicians and health professionals. Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health have agreed to form the fifth HBCU medical school in the country. The school mission’s will be to educate physicians who will be able to provide culturally responsive care and close the gap and racial health inequities. It will take several years for the school to open new students because of the accreditation process As you may recall, the Flexner report of 1910 forced the closure of five out of seven of the HBCU medical schools at the time, leaving behind Meharry and Howard. It’s estimated if those five schools had not closed, they would’ve educated between 25,000 and 35,000 Black physicians. Link: https://t.co/RnZhzZ8A6A
