Chief Scientific Officer at Astellas ? +27 years’ experience in drug discovery and research ? Accelerating the delivery of innovative science to patients worldwide| Championing a leading life science ecosystem in Japan
#CellandGeneTherapies are transforming our approach to treating disease, offering more precise disease-modifying and, in some cases, potentially curative solutions that give new hope to patients. This potential was evident when I attended #CGMesa24 recently, where scientific progress in the field took the spotlight and stories highlighting the impact on patients served as a powerful reminder of why our efforts matter and the power innovation holds to change lives. ? I was delighted to join a fireside chat with Kristin Yarema, Ph.D., President and CEO of Poseida Therapeutics – one of our key innovation partners in cell therapy – to discuss the advances Astellas is making in cell and gene therapy. ? In addition, my colleagues Richard Wilson, Primary Focus Lead, Genetic Regulation, and Ha Tran, MD, MS, Head of Medical Development, Cell and Gene Therapy, shared their expertise during the meeting, addressing critical challenges and opportunities in the field alongside updates on our work in cell and gene therapy. ? A few key insights from the event that resonated with me: New approvals are rapidly advancing. We’ve seen a number of high profile approvals in areas such as advanced synovial sarcoma and Hemophilia B, and up to 14 cell and gene therapy approvals are expected this year across the US and EU – signaling positive momentum toward the FDA’s goal of 10 to 20 approvals per year starting in 2025. After seeing somewhat of a slowdown in 2022 and 2023, investment in cell and gene therapy is resurging. Strong clinical data and positive real-world evidence are supporting investor confidence, particularly in late-stage assets, setting the stage for further innovation and growth. Manufacturing remains a significant challenge to ensuring these innovative therapies reach patients in need. Manufacturing methods vary depending on the type of therapy and cell source, with differing levels of complexity. Navigating this complexity requires substantial and early investment to standardize protocols and build the infrastructure needed to enable scaling up. ? Taken together, these insights highlight the significant progress we’re making, but they also underscore the work ahead. I’m proud to be leading a team at Astellas Pharma who shares this commitment to bringing transformative therapies to patients in need. ? #ScienceFirstForPatients #ChangingTomorrow
