PortSide NewYork is a living lab for better urban waterways. We bring WaterStories to life.

关于我们

PortSide NewYork is a waterfront focused non-profit located on Pier 11, Atlantic Basin next to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We are a living lab for better urban waterways. Our focus is the water part of the WATERfront, the BLUEspace, NYC’s Sixth Borough. Our programs, services and advocacy show how to combine the working waterfront, public access and community development. Our mobile program unit, the historic ship MARY A. WHALEN, holds our offices and is the site of many of our programs. Our education, culture, workforce development and neighborhood promotion programs - all on a water theme - bring the communities ashore and afloat together, for the benefit of all. Building on our hurricane Sandy recovery work - which won us an award from the White House award and honors from the NYS Senate - PortSide is developing flood preparedness and resiliency programs and will curate and house a resiliency center.

Our newsletter today focused on the #BrooklynMarineTerminal (BMT). Get the full newsletter in the QR code or link below. It has the schedule of BMT public events starting tomorrow at 10am and some of our analysis of the presentations made by the NYC EDC and errors in them. One error is that PortSide, the longest-standing tenant in BMT, is not mentioned in EDC's list of tenants. Others are omitted too. There's also much to question in the EDC’s financial calculus and their claim that housing is needed to subsidize a port here, plus operational issues as in our graphic here. #RedHook #Columbiastwaterfront #BMTredevelopment #Brooklyn #maritime #workingwaterfront #NYCEDC https://lnkd.in/ehcvE6-b?

Having said goodbye to the tail end of 2024, we thank you for your support last year! You helped if you donated, volunteered, liked our posts, got involved in some way. ?? You support keeps us afloat – literally, by helping restore and maintain the historic ship MARY A. WHALEN – and by helping PortSide reach so many people on and off the MARY by: ?? ? our “visiting vessels” program that brought the CLEARWATER in 2024 ? shaping plans for the Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT) ? our school programs ? our community resiliency/flood prep work ? our African American Maritime Heritage program ? our virtual museum Red Hook WaterStories ? daily TankerTime access to our special ship ? and a myriad of other things! ?? Hope to see you here and aboard in 2025! ?????? #PortSideNY #MaryWhalen #shipcatchiclet #historicship #RedHook #maritime #Brooklyn #NYC

Here are some of the 50 vessels we reached during PortSide’s 2024 Operation Christmas Cheer on Christmas day! Thanks Donjon Marine Co., Inc. for the tug! Thank you, Jason, Cam, and Ethan on their tug Sarah Ann. This is our way of thanking essential maritime workers, towing industry crew, for all they do. Our tanker #MaryWhalen worked in the towing industry. This video covers a large part of the port of NY showing Red Hook, Gowanus Bay, the Upper Bay anchorage, the Kill Van Kull, and Newark Bay and shows tugs that dock ships, tugs that move fuel or sand and stone, and tugs that do marine construction, dredging and marine salvage work. We pass orange juice, car, and container ports and the floating dry docks of Caddell Shipyard. #maritime #tuglife #portofNY #OperationChristmasCheer #PortSideNY #deckpenguin

From yesterday's newsletter: "On this day in 1968, the Mary A. Whalen went aground. Things looked dark, but the tanker was freed, and this event changed history by leading to a Supreme Court decision U.S. vs Reliable that is cited in major cases - such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill - that has made our environment cleaner and our maritime law fairer. PortSide continues overcoming all odds to make history with the MARY. Our work has high impact on people young and old, on policy, on school curriculum, on local resiliency, on community development, on fighting for more maritime on NYC’s waterfront. We have impact during big events and in more private moments – thinking of the two teens at our holiday party last week who were having their first experience on a boat. They came with teen friends who had been at our holiday party last year, a sign of how we've made our oil tanker a community space." With your support, we can continue and grow this impact! Please send checks made out to PortSide NewYork to 190 Pioneer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231 or use the QR code in the flyer. We've moved the date of our holiday party?due to weather! Instead of this Thursday (forecast to be 39 degrees and windy), we’ll have the party next Tuesday,12/17 which is supposed to be 54 degrees with less wind. Same time of 6-9pm on the Mary Whalen. Mark’s Pizza is now sponsoring the pizza!?One day, we will have building space, and our events will be less weather-dependent.

The Valentino Park toilet is FINALLY happening! It took 10 years from 2014’s first public meetings to the 2018 approval of a toilet, to the current installation starting November 2024. We got involved at the request of then-Councilman Carlos Menchaca Carlos Menchaca and pushed for years after the public process ended. We hope to put redhookwaterstories info where ad panels usually go as was the original understanding. This would provide info about maritime activity visible from shore and historically at this site, plus info about safe boating and fishing in this park. #toiletequity for #RedHook, #Brooklyn #ValentinoPark
