On 9/20, Ports America in New Orleans completed its third annual oyster reef build with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. CRCL has been running its oyster shell recycling program for 10 years now, collecting recycled oyster shells from local restaurants and constructing reefs at carefully selected sites to protect the coastline from erosion. Each year, the state of Louisiana loses about 25,000 acres of coastal land to erosion due to wave action and sea level rise, so restoration projects like these are critically important. This year’s reef site was at the Grand Bayou Indian Village in Plaquemines, Paris, Louisiana. Volunteers from the New Orleans site coordinated the loadout and trucking of over 200 tons of oyster shells down to the Grand Bayou site. Then, along with CRCL staff and a group of volunteers, Ports America employees placed these shells along the banks of the bayou to create a new “living shoreline,” which will protect the ancestral lands of the Grand Bayou tribe for years to come. #OnePortsAmerica #RestoretheShore

As the marine transportation industry continues to make significant strides in environmental stewardship, the waves and winds of innovation are carrying cargo from all over the world to our ports. On September 3rd, our teams at Port Newark Auto Terminal welcomed the maiden voyage of Anemos, the first sailing cargo ship of its kind in modern history. Constructed by TOWT (TransOceanic Wind Transport), Anemos, which comes from the ancient Greek term for ‘wind,’ is the first of an eight-ship fleet to integrate classic sailing technology with the demands of modern logistics. Demonstrating the efficiency of harnessing the power of wind, an abundant and renewable resource, showcases that sustainable practices can coexist with economic viability. Similarly, Ports America’s strategic initiatives focus on reducing our carbon footprint, investing in innovative technologies, and enhancing operational efficiencies to meet the net-zero 2050 ambition. Sustainability measures being taken throughout our locations include implementing solar energy systems, zero-emission equipment, recycling and waste sorting programs, water filtration systems, LED lighting, and other energy-saving initiatives. Here's to the voyage that has just begun and the new courses it charts for the maritime industry and our planet.

Ports America is bridging the gap between the ocean and the cosmos. ? Recently, our team in Miami expertly loaded a Space X satellite casing onto the Maersk Serangoon cargo ship. ? The success of this operation was made possible by the planning and precision of Karl Manning, Gilberto Perez, Peter Meghoo, and Jose Godinez in Miami, and was skillfully executed by the?NCB, the local ILA, Longshoremen, and Clerks. ? In every operation, our team is on a mission to ensure smooth sailing… even for the most out-of-this-world cargo! ? #OnePortsAmerica #ILALocal1416 #ILALocal1922 PortMiami
