If you’re an OG, then you remember in 2023 we used a space satellite to find leaks in our water system. To measure our success, we recently used the IWA LEI robot*!?? ?? Learn how we’re using space and robots to reduce water loss in our system and reach our goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions. ?? (*Robot: okay, it’s just a glorified spreadsheet with a clunky acronym, but let us have this.)

KGW-TV joined Climate Division Manager Kavita Heyn, MESM, MSc to talk about our micro hydro electricity project at the new seismically-safe Washington Park Reservoir that we are building with Hoffman Construction Company: https://lnkd.in/gg34GYzV ? With the help of Portland Clean Energy & Community Benefits Fund, Portland General Electric, and Energy Trust of Oregon, we’re installing two micro hydro turbines to produce clean energy from the flow of drinking water. This project makes us more efficient by recapturing and making clean energy, reducing our electric bills, and moving us to a more climate resilient water system. WUCA members are always raising the bar in the #WaterResilience space! ???? The Portland Water Bureau's Adaptive Water Supply Planning process helps them build reliable and resilient infrastructure systems and strengthen their utility’s response to future uncertainties. This comprehensive and proactive approach is just one example of their leadership in the field!
The Portland Water Bureau implements an Adaptive Water Supply Planning process to make informed decisions about the best ways to invest in a reliable and resilient water supply system to serve our customers. Water resource, planning, operations, engineering and financial experts from across our utility convene annually in an Adaptive Planning Workshop to evaluate water supply system trends and prioritize water supply projects. We just held our 4th Annual Adaptive Planning Workshop this week. Our teams worked to assess the condition of customer demand and water supply conditions so we can right size Portland’s drinking water system and infrastructure for the future. This adaptive process allows the Portland Water Bureau to be nimble, flexible and pivot to meet changing population, climate, water resource, environmental, legal, financial and economic circumstances. Super useful in a time of constant change! The Portland Water Bureau is a recognized national and international leader in the innovative field of Scenario and Adaptive Planning, and a member and former Chair of the Water Utility Climate Alliance (WUCA) which strongly advocates for this type of planning. Thanks to all my amazing colleagues who participated in this year's workshop. Good work teams! Filtration for the Future! Honored to be interviewed by KPTV Fox12 news about drinking water and wildfire. The beauty of the Bull Run was on full display as we discussed the Portland Water Bureau's efforts to mitigate fire risks, our backup supply, how filtration provides new layers of resilience, and the Pilot Team's work to develop science on treating wildfire-impacted water. Safe and reliable drinking water makes our communities resilient after catastrophe. Thank you Brandon Zero for setting it all up! With Portland Water Bureau and KPTV Fox 12 Oregon .

KPTV Fox 12 Oregon talked to Water Quality Engineer Mac Gifford about how the new Bull Run Filtration Project will help protect Portland’s water supply from the increasing risks of wildfires: https://bit.ly/412htxp A well-protected, old-growth forest, the Bull Run Watershed serves as a great water supply for Portland. But in 2023, a wildfire broke out in the watershed, burning 2,055 acres. The Bull Run Filtration Project will help us better protect our water from the potential impacts of wildfires, landslides, and severe storms.?Learn more about the project at: https://lnkd.in/g8Xcss-m

Raise your hand if you’re excited for the grand reopening of Washington Park Reservoir! In 2016 we began construction to replace the historic Washington Park Reservoirs with a 12.4-million-gallon underground reservoir. The new reservoir is designed to withstand seismic activity and landslides while serving water to Portland’s west side. ? ? Final construction with Hoffman Construction Company is expected to wrap up in summer 2025. Stay tuned for more on the grand reopening party! Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/gAksutu3
