So often we turn on our television or watch news on the internet, only to feel disturbed about the news and our world and helpless to do anything about it. Portland Media Center (PMC) gives you a positive alternative. #television On Leap Day, Feb. 29, 2020, PMC is going live on Channel 1303 and on the internet for four hours, from 6PM to 10PM, to tell the stories of local heroes and ask for you to support PMC at the same time. During this time you’re also invited to visit the station at 516 Congress Street in Portland, tour the station, watch the live production, share some refreshments with us, announce your donation on air if you’d like and encourage others to do the same. You’ll hear from people who have overcome abuse, addiction, disabilities, genocide and mental illness to do amazing things; people who have helped others, performed random acts of kindness and worked with their neighbors to make our community a better place that’s uniquely Maine. PMC was founded in 1986 by the University of Southern Maine, Maine Medical Center and the City of Portland as a cooperative for local nonprofit organizations to access local media through a regional cable channel and to bridge the digital divide for low income and disadvantage segments of our community. Portland Media Center's mission is to support, strengthen, and enrich community in Portland, Maine and to assist its citizens and institutions in realizing their greatest potential through public access to electronic communications media. We provide video production equipment training to any resident regardless of economic status. We also provide access to two television stations that cover Portland and the greater Portland area. All our programs are available on demand on our website portlandmedia.org. As an organization with over 40 nonprofit members, PMC also helps to advance their missions in the community through television programs and Internet presence.
