The American Red Cross of Northern New England provides critical mass care services following large disasters like Helene. This includes sheltering, feeding, distributing emergency supplies, and more. Ninety percent of this work is performed by volunteers who come from all over the country to support their neighbors in their greatest hours of need. They currently have 10 volunteers from Southern Maine (Cumberland or York Counties) who have now deployed for a minimum of 2-weeks of volunteer service. Three of those 10 are helping to bring our local Emergency Response Vehicles down south to assist with those mass care operations for thousands of people who have lost their homes. Those volunteers and vehicles left the morning of (10/1). HOW TO HELP People affected by Hurricane Helene need help now. 1. MAKE A FINANCIAL DONATION: Financial donations are the fastest way to get help to people who need it. Visit ??redcross.org or text the word HELENE to 90999 to make a donation to help people affected by Hurricane Helene. 2. GIVE BLOOD: Hurricane Helene has caused more than 1,500 blood donations to go uncollected in the Southeast — yet the need for blood remains constant for patients in need. Those outside the affected areas are encouraged to schedule a blood donation appointment now by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or using the Blood Donor App to help restock the shelves. Their Blood Donor Center in Portland (524 Forest Avenue) is open 7 days a week, but appointments are required. 3. BECOME A RED CROSS VOLUNTEER: If you want to make a difference in the lives of others, consider putting on a red vest and joining us. ??Visit redcross.org/volunteer to find out how you can support our work locally and across the country.
