City, state, and regional business leaders spent the first two days of the week in downtown Portland at the Hilton Portland Downtown for the Cascadia Innovation Corridor's annual conference. "It really is an opportunity for us to all work together on common problems," Christine Gregoire, former Washington Governor and current co-chair of the Corridor, said. "We're confronting here one of the biggest challenges we all have, which is affordable housing — particularly, workforce housing. Everybody's done a pretty good job focusing on homelessness and low-income housing, and what we failed to understand is if we don't focus on workforce housing, we can't solve the low-income and we can't solve the homeless because it's all just packaged together." This week, the Chamber was privileged to co-host the Cascadia Innovation Corridor conference in Portland! Our very own President & CEO, Andrew H., had the opportunity to engage in a thoughtful dialogue with Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, who is the nation's current longest-serving governor. The conversation examined the climate, health, and economic advantages of large-scale dense housing development. The Cascadia Innovation Corridor is an amalgamation of public-private interests that extends from Vancouver, BC to Portland, OR, and aims to establish the world's first sustainable mega-region. The conference facilitated a deep exchange of ideas from brilliant minds across, and beyond, the region to address the residential underproduction that challenges our rapidly expanding region.

The Chamber testified to the Portland City Council in support of the establishment of Urban Renewal Plans and Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) Districts. The Chamber advocated for Resolution 916, which adopts the Westside Urban Renewal Plan, and Resolution 917, directing the City Administrator to collaborate with Prosper Portland on policy amendments. “The establishment of Urban Renewal Plans and TIF districts sends the message that Portland is ‘Open for Business,’” said Andrew Hoan, President and CEO of the Chamber, who also represented Downtown Portland Clean & Safe.
