From learning English ???? to pursuing her dream of becoming an accountant ????, Queeny is showing us all what’s possible when we believe in ourselves and lean on our community. ?? Not only did her language skills open doors, but she landed a job at a local restaurant ??? and earned a promotion ??—all thanks to the power of communication! ??? In honor of National Women's History Month, we’re excited to spotlight Sanda, an inspiring educator at Portland Community College (PCC)! ?? After seeing our post asking for inspiring women, Erick, one of our alumni, reached out to nominate Sanda, highlighting her incredible impact in the Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) department. ?? Sanda has been shaping students’ futures at PCC since 2005 and is passionate about helping them thrive. But one moment that really stands out is when she worked with a 1st grader who thought robotics was “for boys, not girls.” With a little encouragement and some LEGO blocks, Sanda helped the young girl build a tower — and by the end, she proudly declared, “I did it!” ????? This powerful experience reminded Sanda of her mission: to empower young women to believe in themselves and take that first step into fields like engineering. Sanda’s dedication to mentorship, her focus on positivity, and her belief in lifelong learning make her an unforgettable role model for her students. ?? Want to follow in her footsteps? Johanne’s journey perfectly embodies this theme as she moves forward with resilience and determination, inspiring the generations to come. ??? ??From Adversity to Achievement: Johanne’s Inspiring Journey in the IET Welding Cohort??? Meet Johanne, a student in the Integrated Education & Training (IET) Welding program at Portland Community College (PCC), set to graduate TODAY! Her story is one of resilience, hard work, and determination!???? Arriving in the U.S. in 2024, Johanne overcame early hardships, losing both parents at a young age. Despite these challenges, she never gave up on her dreams. Before coming to PCC, she thrived as an HR Manager in her home country.??? At PCC, Johanne’s journey combined technical training in welding and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), boosting her skills and confidence.????? She credits her success to her classmates,Portland Community College Career Pathways & STEP, and the support of her coach, Heather. From Nanny to Future Preschool Owner: Meseret’s Career Pathways Journey At Portland Community College Career Pathways & STEP, we love celebrating the stories of our students—those who embrace new opportunities and work tirelessly to achieve their dreams. This month, we’re thrilled to feature?Meseret, a dedicated mother of four and a passionate early childhood educator in the making. A Journey Rooted in Passion Originally from Ethiopia, Meseret’s career path has been anything but conventional. She has worked as a?nanny, security officer, and close protection officer?at embassies, including the?U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa. However, it was her role as a mother and nanny that sparked her deep love for?early childhood education. “I realized the significant impact early education has on a child’s development, and I wanted to be part of that transformative process.” With that goal in mind, Meseret enrolled in the?Portland Community College Career Pathways & STEP program, specializing in early childhood education. Building a Strong Foundation Through the program, Meseret gained crucial skills in: ??Child development?– Understanding how young minds learn ??Classroom management?– Creating engaging and nurturing learning environments ??Effective communication?– Connecting with students and families But beyond coursework, Career Pathways provided Meseret with?mentorship, career coaching, and a scholarship, helping her grow in confidence and navigate the next steps of her career. A Bright Future Ahead Now, Meseret is ready to?step into the workforce as a preschool teacher, with long-term plans to?open her own preschool. She credits her Career Pathways coach, Tuonglinh, Portland Community College, and Mt. Hood Community College?for helping her turn her dream into a reality. “Without this program, advancing in this field would have been much harder. I am so grateful for the support and opportunities it provided me.” Advice for Future Students Meseret encourages others to take advantage of the Portland Community College Career Pathways & STEP program: “This program gives you both the knowledge and confidence to pursue your passion.
