Misa opened her home and her heart when she became a new foster parent at Porter-Leath. Over the past twelve months, she has hosted seven boys ranging in ages from three to twelve years old. “I thought I was going to be much on my own, and that’s not what you get with this agency, she said. “I can literally call them about anything, even if it is just to decompress and vent and they will listen. There are over 8,300 children in foster care in the state of Tennessee. 1,000 of those are in Shelby County. Check out the work Porter-Leath and our foster families are doing to mitigate these numbers and provide a safe place to live, a nurturing environment in which to grow and the emotional and physical support that can help children thrive.

This week, we’re spotlighting Porter-Leath’s flagship focus area, Connections. Connections stems from our roots as an orphanage and serves as a testament of Porter-Leath’s ability and willingness to evolve with the changing needs of children and families. Connections provides a safe, nurturing environment for children experiencing a troubled time in their lives through foster care.

AmeriCorps Seniors serving as Foster Grandparent volunteers play a unique role in the classrooms they serve. Seniors 55+ can provide one-on-one time with children who need a little extra attention to enhance their social, emotional, and academic development. This role allows seniors an outlet to stay active and engaged in their communities. This year, a total of 18 seniors 55+ graduated from Porter-Leath’s AmeriCorps Seniors Workforce Development Program and reentered the workforce as new early childhood educators. The program gives seniors a second start at a career and a way to stay connected to their communities. A retired educator, Carolyn learned about the workforce development program from a friend. Upon graduating and receiving her Childhood Development Associate Credential, she was hired as an assistant teacher at Porter-Leath! Of her experience, she says, “Thank you for a chance, an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young children. This seasoned educator is back in the workforce, and I’m so happy!”
