?? Big ideas, big impact: At Terminal 2, we're working to turn a historic marine terminal into a Mass Timber Housing and Innovation Campus (MTHIC)—a hub for innovation and collaboration in sustainable housing. Thanks to Brian Gunn and Kenneth Anderton for leading the way during the Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference, showcasing how mass timber and collaboration across industries can help tackle the housing shortage. From cutting-edge research with the University of Oregon and Oregon State University to sustainable modular prototypes at MODSpdx, this project is about creating efficient, high-quality housing solutions while growing the mass timber ecosystem. Excited for what’s next! ??♀??? #InnovationInAction #MassTimber #AffordableHousing #PortlandInnovation
Today, Kenneth Anderton and I led a tour of Terminal 2, the future site of the Port of Portland's future Mass Timber Housing and Innovation Campus (MTHIC), as part of the Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference. Our discussions focused on a key theme of the conference: how we can learn from each other to accelerate the production of affordable housing through innovative products that deliver higher quality units more efficiently and cost-effectively. The Port's next major project, MTHIC, aims to do just that—transforming a historic marine terminal into a hub for housing manufacturing innovation, mass timber research, and collaboration across construction, manufacturing, climate-tech, and entrepreneurship, ultimately increasing housing production to address the housing shortage. We were joined by Mark Fretz from the University of Oregon who shared details on the future Acoustic Research and Energy Studies in Buildings laboratories that will be located at MTHIC, as well as their collaborative efforts with Oregon State University at the TallWood Design Institute on the Mass Plywood Panel (MPP) workforce housing prototype. These are just a few of the projects that the Port and its partners at the Oregon Mass Timber Coalition are working on, to expand the mass timber ecosystem and increase affordable housing options. We also visited MODSpdx to hear from Nathan Young and see their MPP modular prototype, showcasing an example of sustainable, factory-built housing solutions. Excited to help drive housing and mass timber innovation in the Pacific Northwest! #PortofPortland #CascadiaInnovationCorridor #MassTimber #HousingInnovation #Sustainability #MTHIC #FutureofHousing #Collaboration #HousingSolutions #PublicPrivatePartnership #AffordableHousing #WorkforceHousing #HousingCrisis #Cascadia

The Portland International Airport’s new terminal roof represents a monumental achievement for the #masstimber industry. We worked with ZGF Architects and Sustainable Northwest to ensure that the thousands of uniquely cut pieces of timber could be traced back to the forest of origin. Since opening in August, the project has welcomed thousands of visitors to the region and brilliantly showcases the rich history and current context of the Pacific Northwest timber industry. Timberlab's fabrication expertise was critical to the success of the Portland International Airport's mass timber roof structure, one of the largest installations of its kind in the United States. This project was one of the first to go through our Portland, Oregon facility, which was strategically located near the project site. That immediate proximity ensured meticulous quality control and streamlined logistics, enabling efficient delivery and installation. Leveraging CNC technology, Timberlab achieved the tight tolerances necessary for this intricate roof design, demonstrating the scalability and precision of mass timber for large-scale infrastructure projects. #PDXnext #masstimberconstruction #timberconstruction #timberengineering #timberbuilding #woodbuilding #glulam #crosslaminatedtimber #clt #cltbuilding #masstimberconference #forestproducts #forestindustry #forestproud #wooddesign #timberdesign #sustainablearchitecture #sustainabledesign Timberlab.com/projects/pdx Owner: Port of Portland Architect: ZGF Architects Engineer: KPFF Consulting Engineers GC: Hoffman Construction Company | Skanska Project Partners: ZIP-O-LAMINATORS LLC | Freres Wood | Swinerton | Sustainable Northwest Photos: FLOR Projects

Condé Nast just dropped its Bright Ideas in Travel list, and guess who’s shining bright? ?? That’s right—PDX! This list gives a nod to places tackling travel’s biggest challenges with creativity and heart—sustainability, community, inclusion, and all-around good vibes. This year, PDX earned a spot for making local and independent businesses the stars of our new main terminal. (We’re beyond proud!) Oh, and fun fact: we made the list last year, too, for using locally sourced wood in our design. Here’s to making travel better for everyone who calls PDX home and all the travelers passing through.
