The Port purchased nearly 200 homes from an out-of-town investor last month with one goal - creating affordable homeownership opportunities. The Wall Street Journal shares the story of how institutional investors are buying up larger shares of the residential real estate market for high-priced rentals, and how The Port is taking ownership for residents. #affordablehousing #ThePortImpact https://on.wsj.com/3rnNehw

Last week's AIA Cincinnati and SoapboxCincy panel on Development Beyond the Basin took a look at how neighborhoods outside of the urban core are encouraging and guiding growth to achieve community goals. The Port's Director of Industrial Development, Chris Meyer, moderated an insightful panel on density and development, including challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned. Thank you to panelists Ross Battoclette with Champlin Architecture, Dean Lutton with Reztark Design Studio, and Michael Stehlin with Hamilton County Government for a great discussion! In this season of thanks and giving, we are thankful for our staff who volunteered their free time to help low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners prepare their homes for winter. Prepare Affair, one of the largest volunteer events in the tri-state, is hosted by People Working Cooperatively, Inc. Several Port staff members spent their weekend raking leaves, cleaning gutters, and helping those in need prepare for the changing seasons. Way to go! #community #communityservice #prepareaffair #cincinnati #volunteer

Our latest virtual tour stop takes us to a downtown corner with a lot of history. ?? The Northwest corner of Third and Vine was once home to the Burnet House. Opened in 1850, this hotel hosted some of the most famous figures of its day, including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Henry Clay, and more. It closed and was demolished in 1926. ??? Just two years later, the Union Central Life Insurance Building approved the construction of a new structure to expand its existing headquarters, the Union Central Tower. When it opened to the public in 1928, the intent was to continue to expand the building further skyward, but those plans never came to fruition. ??Union Central Life moved out of the building in the 1960s, and other major companies began working out of the building, but occupancy dwindled over the decades, and by the mid-2010s it was mostly vacant. ?? City Club Apartments renovated the building and converted it from offices to residences. Opened in 2016, City Club brings 295 apartments, a ground-level grocery store, rooftop restaurant, and more to the city's core. The Port played a role in this historic structure's revival, providing support through its Public Finance practice.
