Port Houston serves as the local sponsor and a strategic leader of the Houston Ship Channel, working alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to maintain and enhance this vital federal waterway for the region and the nation. This effort includes annual maintenance dredging to keep the channel at its authorized depth and ensure safe navigation. In addition to maintenance dredging, Port Houston leads the charge to deepen and widen the channel through what is known today as Project 11. Port Houston began planning these latest improvements to the Houston Ship Channel in 2010, working in collaboration with Congress, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and channel stakeholders. This is the eleventh major improvement project to the waterway over its history dating back more than a century, which is why it is called Project 11. At Port Houston, teamwork and preparedness make all the difference, not just in daily operations but in life-or-death situations. Recently, two dedicated employees, GeCoby Burton and John Ramos, sprang into action to save a young child from choking while aboard the M/V Sam Houston tour boat. While assisting passengers, GeCoby and John noticed a toddler struggling to breathe after eating a piece of candy. Without hesitation, GeCoby stepped in, calmly assessed the situation, and began using first aid back blows to help clear the child’s airway. Meanwhile, John reassured the family and kept everyone as calm as possible. Within seconds, the child was breathing again, safe in their parents' arms. Our team members’ quick thinking, CPR training, and ability to remain calm under pressure turned a terrifying moment into a life-saving success. Both credit their training and teamwork for preparing them to act in a crisis. ?? Help us celebrate GeCoby and John for their incredible bravery!

The Houston Pilots have adjusted the daylight restriction reference point from South Boaters Cut to north of the Bayport Ship Channel, increasing the sailing window for daylight-restricted vessels by 30 more minutes. Since the Houston Ship Channel Expansion, also known as Project 11 began, overall sailing time has expanded by nearly 2 hours, strengthening the flow of commerce. Progress continues!
