Gumboot Up – Standing Together for Youth Mental Health! We’re proud to join our New Zealand colleagues for Gumboot Friday, an inspiring initiative led by the I Am Hope Foundation. This movement invites us to wear gumboots (or, as they're known in the U.S., rain boots) as a powerful symbol of the “mud” that young people often navigate when facing mental health challenges. Since its launch, Gumboot Friday has provided over 100,000 free counseling sessions to those 25 and under, bridging a crucial gap in accessible mental health support. It’s more than just a day – it’s a message to young people that they are not alone, and with the right support, they can make it through the mud. At Port Blakely, we stand united with those who walk through this “mud” every day. Let’s raise awareness, support our youth, and make a difference together – wherever we are in the world. ??? #MentalHealthAwareness #PortBlakelyCares #IAmHope #YouthSupport?

A Balanced Future for Washington's Forests? In a recent Seattle Times letter to the editor, our CEO René Ancinas discussed the critical importance of long-rotation forestry and the future of Washington's forests. As a sixth-generation family-owned forestry company, Port Blakely manages 160,000 acres in the Pacific Northwest with a commitment to sustainable forestry practices that balance environmental and economic benefits.? At Port Blakely, our commitment to growing trees 50% longer than industry standards produces premium timber that is stronger, more durable, and ideal for critical infrastructure projects, including utility poles and architectural beams. This long-rotation approach not only yields superior wood products but also fosters diverse, multi-age forests that support vital wildlife habitats and enhance climate resilience. By extending the life cycle of our trees, we balance economic value with environmental stewardship, ensuring the long-term health of our forests, the ecosystems they sustain, and the communities that depend on them.? However, the viability of long-rotation forestry is directly tied to the existence of regional mills that can process older, larger trees. Restrictions on timber harvests from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) “legacy forests” threaten these mills, which are already in short supply. If these mills close, the entire infrastructure supporting long-rotation forestry could collapse, pushing private landowners toward shorter rotations that degrade biodiversity and forest health.? Rather than restricting harvests, we should prioritize promoting a diverse mix of forest types and ages, which are essential for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring long-term economic success. By keeping mills operational and supporting multi-age forest management across public and private lands, we can protect Washington’s forests, bolster local communities, and secure the environmental and economic benefits that sustainable forestry provides.?
