MALARIA CONTROL: Z'bar faces a challenge as outdoor biting mosquitoes increase Malaria control in Zanzibar faces a growing challenge, as new study findings reveal an increase in malaria cases linked to outdoor-biting mosquitoes, complicating efforts to combat the disease. While insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor spraying have been effective indoors, outdoor transmission remains a major risk. ?????? The study, conducted by scientists from the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Program (ZAMEP), Population Services International, and Ifakara Health Institute, emphasizes the need for new strategies to protect high-risk outdoor populations, including those who work or socialize outside at night. ????? For Wube and her husband, Gebre, starting their life together wasn’t easy. Financial struggles and the pressures of living with in-laws made it hard to dream of a better future. Then Wube learned about #SmartStart; a programme designed to help young couples plan their futures through financial literacy, savings, and family decision-making.? ? Despite challenges, she found ways to attend sessions and apply what she learned. With time, she and Gebre made a bold decision to move out of their in-law’s home and start fresh. It wasn’t easy, but the lessons from Smart Start gave them the tools to make it work. Wube launched a small business, and together, they built a more independent, supportive partnership.? ? Exciting Progress on HPV Vaccination in Ethiopia! We are thrilled to join the Ministry of Health and key partners for a national consultative workshop in Adama (March 20 – 21, 2025) focused on shaping the future of HPV vaccination in the country. Together with Regional Health Bureaus and stakeholders, we explored strategies to sustainably routinize and institutionalize HPV vaccination - ensuring long-term access for girls aged 9 to 14. Dr. Rahel Demissew, our SRH Programs Director, presented key findings from the HPV VISION project’s formative assessment, sparking rich dialogue on integration, service linkage, and implementation opportunities. These insights helped shape strategies for embedding HPV vaccination into routine immunization.
