?? JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN TO #StandWithData ?? Dear friend of PRB, If you’re following the news, you probably know that the landscape of government funding in the United States is undergoing a historic—and in many cases, destabilizing—shift. What you might not know is that this new reality puts some of PRB’s most important work at risk. Federal funding cuts endanger some of our most popular and enduring resources, like the?World Population Data Sheet?(funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development) and the?Population Bulletin?series. Much of our work to support data literacy, access, and integrity—in the United States and internationally—is also on the line. PRB remains a strong partner to many foundations that support crucial project work, and for this we are extremely grateful. But this unanticipated loss of funding limits our ability to be the data advocate you know us to be—at a time when the world most desperately needs it. So we’re asking for your help. ?? Donate to PRB here : https://bit.ly/4hbUtBc Your?tax-deductible donation?could be the dollar that helps us: ?? reach?one more classroom?with the World Population Data Sheet ?? train?one more journalist?to use data in their reporting ?? hold?one more webinar?to bring crucial evidence to the public ?? create?one more publication?that translates complex research into actionable insights ?? build?one more bridge?between data users ?? help?one more researcher?communicate their findings ?? dispel?one more myth?about population science in the media ?? make?one more effort?to center evidence in policy Thank you for your continued support, and thank you for standing with PRB as we #StandWithData.

?? Name something better than a fresh coat of paint on a dull, tired wall? We'll wait...? Thanks to our staffers who put in the elbow grease this week to give our office a quick refresh. Our day jobs may be "data nerds," but we're pretty handy, too!

Work Hard, Have Fun… But Maybe Don’t Do What I Did! As an HR professional, I know I shouldn’t have done what I did in this video. (Let’s just say it’s a classic Workers’ Comp no-no ??.) This week at PRB, we had a wall that needed a fresh coat of paint ??. We could have called building maintenance or hired a painter, but instead, we asked our team if anyone wanted to take it on. And wow, did they step up! From volunteers bringing supplies to others providing snacks, music, and plenty of enthusiasm, we turned a simple task into a great team-building morning. You really learn who has an eye ??? for detail (and who just loves to paint) when you work on something outside of your usual day-to-day. Special thank you to the PRB team, especially Julia Greene, Ph.D., Kaitlyn Patierno, Mark Mather, Diana Elliott, Immanuel Wolff & Jennifer Sciubba, Ph.D. Check out the video, and know that the wheels on the table were in a locked ?? position, but I still should have used a ladder ?? and in the future I will. When’s the last time you and your team worked on a project and had some fun along the way? Share your stories in the comments! #FelipeCofi?o #PRB #Teamwork #WorkplaceCulture

This county level analysis from Mark Mather pairs nicely with the census data from last week about declines in US births. Looking at the subnational level is crucial for understanding US population trends. What appears to be strong growth at the national level looks very different when you zoom in. #data #immigration PRB

Demographer and associate VP @ PRB with expertise in population research, aging, inequality, and census data. Director of the Center for Public Information on Population Research.

Without immigration, hundreds of counties across the United States would be shrinking. Here’s a map showing the 458 U.S. counties (shaded yellow) that would have lost population between 2023 and 2024 without immigration. In another 822 counties (shaded purple), immigration helped offset population losses, so depopulation was not as severe as it would have been. In effect, immigration is “propping up” the populations in many local communities. This isn’t a new trend, but it’s accelerated in recent years partly because of the shift toward smaller families. Today, the TFR is just 1.6—the lowest level ever recorded in the United States. For many counties, immigration was also key to offsetting losses from domestic migration. For example, Marion County, IN had a net outflow of 10,500 domestic migrants between 2023 and 2024 but saw a net increase of 10,450 international migrants during the same period.??

?? NEW PRB ANALYSIS ??: Without immigration, hundreds of U.S. counties would be SHRINKING, according to an analysis of new population data released today by Mark Mather, PRB's Associate Vice President for U.S. Programs. ? ?? Over 450 American counties (shaded yellow in the map below) would have lost population between 2023 and 2024 without immigration. ?? In another 822 counties (shaded purple), immigration helped offset population losses, so depopulation was not as severe as it would have been. In effect, immigration is “propping up” the populations in many local communities. This isn’t a new trend, but it’s accelerated in recent years partly because of the shift toward smaller families. During the baby boom, the total fertility rate (TFR), or the average number of lifetime births per woman, peaked at over 3.5. But today, the TFR is just 1.6—the lowest level ever recorded in the United States. For many counties, immigration was also key to offsetting losses from domestic migration. For example, Marion County, Indiana, had a net outflow of 10,500 domestic migrants between 2023 and 2024, but saw a net increase of 10,450 international migrants during the same period.?
