Poetry connects us all. That’s why a Nepali poetry competition, inspired by Population Media Center's (PMC) radio shows Mai Sari Sunakhari and Junimayako Katha, has become a platform for powerful storytelling and social transformation. With support from the Kendeda Fund, PMC-Nepal amplified voices and sparked meaningful change through poetry.? ? From a 27-year-old woman striving for financial independence to a 60-year-old man reflecting on loss and regret, the poems submitted showcased personal journeys of growth, resilience, and empowerment. Pragati Rai, inspired by the character Juni Maya, is now pursuing her career while promoting women’s financial independence. Meanwhile, Min Bahadur Magar uses his experience to raise awareness about modern healthcare and the dangers of child marriage.? ? The top 10 poems, submitted from across Nepal, were shared widely, letting the world hear stories that matter. The #Sunakhari Poem Competition isn’t just about poems—it's about creating real change and highlighting societal issues like #gender equity, #healthcare, #child marriage, and the importance of #education.? ? This initiative, in collaboration with ACORAB, Rato Bangala Foundation, and The Story Kitchen, reached people across Nepal, inspiring them to reflect, act, and empower their communities. On this #International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), we must confront a practice that continues to harm millions of girls and women worldwide. FGM is not only a violation of human rights, but it also limits opportunities, affects physical and mental health, and perpetuates harmful gender norms. With over 200 million women and girls having undergone FGM, the challenge remains significant, but progress is possible. The UN targets full eradication by 2030, and organizations like Population Media Center (PMC) are leading the charge through powerful media interventions. Population Media Center’s approach uses storytelling to shift cultural attitudes around deeply ingrained practices like Female Genital Mutilation. Through radio dramas such as #Ngelawu Nawet (“Winds of Hope”) in Senegal and #Jigi ma Tigne (“Hope is Allowed”) in Mali, listeners are becoming less likely to view #FGM as a cultural norm, with a noticeable increase in awareness about its dangers. By focusing on community-driven media solutions and working in countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda, PMC is accelerating the global movement to eliminate FGM. Join us today in taking a stand to end this harmful practice—support the work of PMC and help create a future free from FGM.
