Today, I had the pleasure of chairing an invited session at the Population Association of America’s annual conference titled “Demography in the Wake of Disasters.” The session highlighted the critical role demographers play in providing timely and accurate population and housing estimates in areas experiencing rapid change—especially when traditional data sources are limited or unavailable. It was also a powerful reminder of the deeply human aspect of our work. At the center of every estimate, model, and analysis are real people—often individuals and communities facing the profound disruptions caused by natural disasters. #PAA2025 #Demography #PopulationStudies #DataForGood

Was very disappointed and discouraged to be informed that the 2030 Census Advisory Committee, which I was a member of, has been terminated. As I told the NYT, this is a very "disconcerting" development. I hope there is an opportunity, with the help of policymakers and stakeholders, to revisit the need for ALL census advisory committees to be reestablished.
