Andrew Casale said it well at the 2024 Pontiac Summit: cutting out MFA had a net positive effect on Index Exchange's marketplace. We've known forever that DSPs can't handle the total volume of supply coming at them from the supply side, so they throttle what they see. This means that different DSPs have different views on inventory and what they can provide to buyers. At Pontiac, we focus on super premium CTV with a layer of transparency that is unmatched. DSP and throttling: complicated stuff. But, fascinating! About a month after the #PontiacSummit2024 we are starting to dig through material and this quote from Andrew Casale is simply too great to breeze over. He explains that Index Exchange famously removed any MFA sites they identified from their exchange and it had no impact on overall revenue. Here at Pontiac, we built our own bidder. No...we have not licensed someone else's and called it our own (this is way more common than I thought). We built our own from the ground up, and we understand how much the DSP throttling impacts what the end client receives. More on that next week. Curation good! Curation bad! While most targeting offered by curation can be done through a DSP today, curation is a perfect trend for the privacy safe world of tomorrow. It will have a tremendous impact as a core product and differentiator for the SSPs and exchanges. And, of course, like any product in advertising, some will use it to justify unreasonably high margins. Agency vs. arbitrage - an interesting debate on the best way to make money and represent clients. In this video, Keith Gooberman dives into how the trend of agencies moving to principal based buying might not be the best tactic for agencies, especially when the volume of work needed to manage media is higher than ever before.
Transparency vs no transparency! What a great argument. Maybe the amount of s%&t an agency has to handle when they are launching across 35 different digital platforms is simply too much and they need to take positions to make more money? Maybe the agency bill-by-the-hour-by-the-person (FTE) model won't work anymore because of how much work it takes to launch, monitor, optimize and not F*#k up these campaigns? Maybe the clients are asking agencies to do this because they don't want to admit to paying higher fees but they require all types of additional services. Trying to keep creative specs organized across all these social platforms is a full time job. No joke.
