?? Security Advisory: Beware of Fraudulent Mail Extortion Attempts?? A fraudulent scheme is currently being distributed throughout the U.S. Mail, falsely claiming that companies have been compromised. These letters attempt to extort organizations by demanding a Bitcoin ransom in exchange for not leaking supposedly stolen sensitive data. Key Details of This Scam: The letter falsely states that cybercriminals have gained access to internal systems and stolen confidential information such as Social Security numbers, payroll records, insurance data, and legal documents. The letter uses a legitimate threat actor and their contact information, but the payment details are tied to another threat actor.? The threat actor represented has never sent demands through the mail. Thus far, the letter is a form letter that demands a payment of $350,000 in Bitcoin within 10 days to prevent the alleged release of data.? The letter may morph over time. The scammers claim they will “permanently destroy” all data in their possession if the ransom is paid. The letter attempts to instill fear by stating that the data will be leaked to clients, partners, and media if payment is not made.? Along with threats not to contact the FBI. It discourages victims from reporting the incident to law enforcement, falsely claiming that authorities will be unable to help. What You Should Do: Do NOT Respond or Pay – This is a scam designed to exploit fear. Paying the ransom does not guarantee anything.? Do not scan the QR code or attempt to respond. Report the Attempt – If you receive such a letter, report it to your local authorities and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov. Verify Your Security – If you have concerns about your company’s cybersecurity, conduct an internal review and engage a cybersecurity professional if needed.? As a customer you have access to the SOC, the DFIR team, as well as Pondurance management. Stay Vigilant – Scammers often change tactics. Educate your team on social engineering attempts and phishing scams. Remember: Receiving such a letter does not mean your company has actually been breached.
