As we step into 2025, I’m incredibly optimistic about the continuing growth of the #OOH (out-of-home) and #DOOH (digital out-of-home) industry. Every day, I’m fortunate to work with ambitious startups and seasoned media owners diving into this exciting space. The questions I get are often similar: ?? Where should I invest in billboards that are in high demand? ?? How do I attract more clients and drive sales? ?? What strategies will help me stand out in this competitive market? With over 230 active media owners in South Africa (each owning at least one billboard), competition is fierce. But for those ready to maximize opportunities in 2025, here’s my advice: 1. Understand Your Breakevens & Be Realistic The breakeven for OOH investments typically ranges from 8–15 months, depending on factors like rate card discounts (avg. ~25%) and occupancy levels (avg. ~65%). Before breaking ground, evaluate if your location justifies the investment. 2. Go Big or Go Unique A billboard is just a billboard... unless you stand out. If you can’t offer a massive network, go supersize or unique. Distinctive designs and features grab attention in ways generic formats can’t. 3. Niche is Nice! When building or investing in media networks, focus on a niche audience. A clearly defined audience makes your assets more appealing to media strategists and easier to sell. 4. Without Accredited Audience Data, You’re Not at the Table Data drives decisions. Ensure all your media assets are backed by accredited audience analytics. Claims like “everyone in [city] sees this daily” won’t cut it—verified data is non-negotiable.
