Overview As outlined in the Polk County Charter, the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) is the governing body of Polk County. Each commissioner is elected by a countywide vote. Duties and Powers The County Commission adopts an annual budget which includes appropriations for services provided by county government including the Sheriff, Property Appraiser, Tax Collector and Supervisor of Elections. This budget also includes appropriations in support of the Circuit and County Courts, State Attorney, Public Defender and Clerk of the Court. Some other responsibilities: * levying taxes and fees, * provide and maintain county buildings, * provide fire protection and ambulance services, * provide health and welfare programs, * provide parks, preserves, playgrounds, libraries, museums, historical sites, recreation and cultural facilities and programs, * prepare and enforce comprehensive plans for the development in the county, * establish, coordinate, and enforce zoning and such business regulations as are necessary for the protection of the public, * adopt and enforce building, housing and related technical codes and regulations, * establish and administer programs of housing, slum clearance, community redevelopment, conservation, flood control, air pollution control, * provide and regulate waste and sewage collection and disposal, water supply and conservation programs, * provide and operate public transportation systems, roads, bridges and related facilities.

    The Community Health Care section of Polk County's Health and Human Services Division is providing nonprofit organizations with the tools they need to carry out their mission. Evaluating Programs the SMART Way: A Guide for Community Organizations is a workshop aimed at helping organizations be more competitive for funding opportunities, improve their processes and measure their success. Participants will learn how to set #SMART goals for their organizations, examine real-world case studies and leave with practical tools to better advocate for their causes and their communities. This workshop is ideal for professionals from community organizations with a mission to improve quality of life for Polk County residents. Admission to the workshop is free. Registration is required.     Polk County’s Roads and Drainage Division will host a hiring event on Thursday, Oct. 3, for heavy equipment operators. A Class A or Class B CDL is required for all applicants. This position is eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus as well as all regular Polk County benefits. Available positions and starting pay: Service Worker/Equipment Operator II – $16.85 Service Worker/Equipment Operator III – $18.58 A representative from Polk County’s recruitment team will be available at the event to conduct on-the-spot interviews and to assist candidates with the application process.
