PFS is pleased to announce a new partnership with the National Centre for Atmospheric Science! We will be offering our expertise in deep-field expedition support to aid in the deployment of a state-of-the-art automated and mobile observatory in Greenland. Check out the post below to learn more about this exciting new project! #greenland #arctic #sciencesupport #logistics #nature #unlocktheplanet
This year, a team of pioneering scientists is setting out to transform how we understand one of the most critical frontlines of climate change - the Greenland Ice Sheet. Their solution? A state-of-the-art, automated, and mobile polar observatory, built to withstand the Arctic’s most extreme conditions. For years, researchers have battled logistical challenges, harsh weather, and data gaps in one of the most under-sampled regions of the Arctic. Now, thanks to advancements in renewable energy, remote sensing, automated aerial systems, and machine learning, a self-sustaining, Arctic-hardened observatory will provide real-time, high-resolution climate data - helping to identify tipping points in Greenland’s ice loss. Why this matters: ?? Greenland’s ice loss is the largest contributor to rising sea levels globally. ?? Melting ice disrupts ocean currents and climate patterns worldwide. ?? Understanding heat transfer, meltwater penetration, and ice accumulation is crucial for predicting future climate impacts. Before deployment in Greenland, the team will test the observatory in Iceland, ensuring it’s resilient enough for the most extreme environments. The long-term vision? Redefining polar research and shaping global climate strategies. This is science at the cutting edge - where innovation meets urgency. _ Kudos to Ryan Neely, Sarah Barr, and Heather Guy at NCAS, Michael Gallagher at CIRES / University of Colorado Boulder, along with Ben Pickering at Menapia Ltd and Jessy Jenkins at Polar Field Services, Inc., for leading this ambitious effort. And thanks to the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) for backing this project!

What began as an ambitious international venture—united through the efforts of Denmark, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Norway, Switzerland, and the USA—now faces the realities of budget cuts, shifting collaborations, and evolving funding partners. The challenge of scaling down portions of this project landed with PFS through the Battelle Arctic Research Operations (ARO) contract, with our first mission focused on demobilizing a station we initially supported installing, nestled in the remote S?dalen Valley of Sermersooq, Greenland. Picture this: crafting a net so advanced that, when draped over assets or personnel, it becomes a cloak of invisibility—out of sight to satellites, drones, planes, and even the most vigilant ground observers. Now, imagine making that same net adaptable to every kind of terrain—whether it is snow-dusted mountain peaks, windswept grassy fields, or jagged rocky outcrops. Add in unpredictable weather, from blinding rain to intense sun, and you have a challenge that seems straight out of a spy thriller...
