Lead is a toxic metal found in paint, dust, soil, and water. Lead poisoning can happen when someone is exposed to lead through eating lead paint chips, ingesting contaminated food or water, and/or inhaling lead dust. Children younger than 6 are more likely to be exposed to lead from putting objects such as toys and dirt in their mouths. Here's how to prevent lead poisoning: ??Contact your local health department about testing paint and dust in your home for lead. ??Supervise children to ensure they do not accidentally touch, breathe, or swallow any sources of lead (toys, paint, contaminated food). ??Most children with lead in their blood do not have noticeable symptoms. Talk to your child's healthcare provider to see if blood lead testing is recommended. If you have questions about lead poisoning, call our Poison Help line at?1-800-222-1222 or visit PoisonHelp.org for fast, free, confidential advice.
