Each month, Melissa Botta-Havran, M.Ed., Chair of the Dr. Michael F. Botta Professor Spotlight Recognition Committee, highlights a Point Park faculty member in our e-news. In case you missed her profile on Dr. Edward Strimlan last month, we've got you covered. "Dr. Edward Strimlan is the Chair of the Criminal Justice and Intelligence Department. Before his tenure at the university, Dr. Strimlan was a former chief forensic investigator for Allegheny County's Office of the Medical Examiner. Strimlan brings real-world stories and years of experience, conducting more than 2,000 death scene investigations into the classroom. As if this figure wasn’t impressive enough, Strimlan has worked for three of the best pathologists in the world; Dr Joshua Perper, Dr Cyril Wecht, and Dr Karl Williams. For prospective students looking to work with the best, these names speak volumes as to the experience the professors of CJIS have. Now as chair of the Criminal Justice and Intelligence Program, he helps students develop their skills in areas of criminal profiling, psychology, death scene investigation, anatomy, physiology, and forensic evidence. Strimlan also appeals to incoming freshmen by hosting a CSI summer camp at the university in which students can test their sleuthing skills in live simulations guaranteed to capture their interest and encourage them to dig beyond the evidence they see on the surface. Strimlan and his carefully selected department work hard to help students apply ethical perspectives and judgment to field related problems, while helping them gain practical experience through internships and other career opportunities beyond the classroom. Like many professors at Point Park, Strimlan and his experienced staff always seek opportunities to engage incoming Freshmen by networking with local schools in the Pittsburgh area. ?A close-knit community, the Criminal Justice and Intelligence Department boasts highly qualified instructors who have done the job in the field and have experiences that go beyond what you see on Television or read in newspapers. To Strimlan, having a staff who has real-world experience in their field is an asset that makes his department unique. What is perhaps most exciting, and sets this university’s program aside from others, is the crime scene house students will use throughout their courses in forensic science and criminal justice. Starting with death scene investigations, students will learn how to process a crime scene, interview, and be interviewed. It’s all interactive and provides a great resource for students. This robust program has developed over time and continues to stay true to its mission, which is to provide all students with an opportunity to learn, engage, and grow in their field. This commitment to academic excellence makes the Criminal Justice and Intelligence Program one of the best in the nation."
