Incredible story by an even more incredible person! Thx for sharing Kennedy Muff
That last day – the one when the sport an athlete loves comes to an end – is an incredibly tough day. It’s a hard goodbye, filled with emotions that are often difficult to express. Most people understand the loss that accompanies the end of a long athletic career. But what many don’t realize is the anxiety and uncertainty that comes with asking, “What’s next?” The mental toll of that transition can be overwhelming. “I had spent my whole life working to be good at my sport, giving it everything I had. It was such a part of my identity that even a whole year after playing, I still find myself sometimes introducing myself as a volleyball player from the University of Florida. "And I see the same dependency with other athletes. We have been so dedicated to our craft that we have a tough time separating ourselves from it. "But our sport is not who we are, it is what we do. "And when we realize that truth, we can take what we have learned from our sport and carry that with us to new opportunities.” -Kennedy Muff, Partnerships Coordinator at Podium X “Am I going to be okay? Last week, Kennedy Muff and I had the incredible opportunity to attend Jacksonville University’s EmpowHER Career Networking Event! It was so rewarding getting to connect with the talented female student-athletes of JU and share our journeys that led us to where we are today. We also got to shine a light on Podium X and the work we’re doing to support student-athletes as they transition into life beyond sport. Thank you, Courtney Taybron and team, for creating such a special space for these conversations. We can’t wait to see what’s next for this talented group of student-athletes! #NotDoneWinning #EmpowHER

Athletes understand pressure. The pressure to make the shot. The pressure to win the game. But there is also the constant pressure to be more, to do more, to achieve more. It is the nature of the beast, and if they are a competitor – which all high-level athletes are – they often accept that challenge and dig in. The internal dialogue of “I need to be the best” can contribute to feelings of inadequacy when performance dips or injuries occur. The psychological toll of this pressure can leave athletes vulnerable to identity crises, especially when transitioning out of competitive sports. The American Psychological Association notes that many collegiate athletes struggle with self-worth and depression after their playing careers end, as their sense of identity was so tightly bound to their sport. When the game stops, they are often left grappling with the question: Who am I without my sport? And as they turn to finding a career beyond athletics, the next question becomes: I have fought so hard to be enough in my sport, can I be enough without it? The answer is: Yes.
