Our son Trajan has been Labneh-ing his bagels this week and I’m going with the seasonal local eggplant/tomatoes. This is a good example of what we are trying to do. It’s beautiful to see a small east coast brand like Choomi Naturals (GREAT gluten free cookies,BTW) on the shelf at Safeway in NorCal. They are wedged between massive CocaCola and Starbucks sets, and wouldn’t have gotten there without secondary distribution. This is the near-future of innovation we are trying to bring about. ??Consumers can have the choice to buy Big CPG products side-by-side with more innovation in “conventional” grocery. ??Retailers can carry the big brands they know they need, but also the differentiators they want. ??Emerging brands can reach scale and profitability by unlocking growth at larger chain accounts. It was only a matter of time. Hormel Foods and General Mills have joined forces to add Cinnamom Toast Crunch Sugar Rub to Bacon. I’m sure this will be successful in terms of sales…Hormel’s operating income was over $1 Billion in 2023, and they are professionals who know what they’re doing. They have powerful Data which show how blasting their Bacon with more sugar and a marketing campaign with a children’s cereal will produce huge results. With great power comes great responsibility. Business doesn’t function ONLY to make money. This type of “innovation” doesn’t help public health. Instead of spending money marketing legacy brands, they could make the Bacon antibiotic free, improving animal welfare, or making the “cinnadust” less sugary. Retailers: If we are going down this road of huge CPG collaborations we need to make sure consumers have a viable choice for healthier alternatives also. For example, North Country Smokehouse, LLC. makes fantastic healthier bacon in New Hampshire on a vertically integrated farm network. Wipala Snacks and The Real Cereal Company are doing great things to make tasty cereal healthier for our families. Amazon Saver is going to get the headlines here, but it’s the Prime Discounts that will have the biggest impact. I think the Saver packaging design looks great, for what it is. You can see this from 50 feet away in a store. The sub-$5 price point will have mass appeal and serves an important purpose. Amazon: do the right thing and make these products with a reasonable quality and don't fill them with toxic preservatives and excessive amounts of sugar. Amazon can afford to invest in this and put Walmart on notice if the product is actually healthy and tastes good. …but the Amazon prime deals of 50% off 10-15 blockbuster grocery items every week are the real game changer here, potentially. If these are actually “category killer” items that drive volume, this can have a HUGE impact on retail. Imagine how many people would flood in and buy NY Strip or Salmon at 50% off, along with 50% off Avocados, Ice Cream, and Olive Oil (as an example). Will be interesting to watch.
