The new rule expands overtime eligibility for millions of workers and increases the salary threshold used to determine whether a worker is exempt from overtime pay. Workers making less than $58,656 are automatically owed time-and-a-half-wages for overtime. Going forward, the threshold will be updated every three years. The New York City Council voted to approve Mayor Adams’ “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity” proposal - one of the most substantial housing proposals in New York City’s history. The proposal includes citywide zoning reforms to open opportunities for new housing. It also provides billions of dollars in funding: -$1 billion for housing developments -$2 billion for infrastructure projects -$1 billion for tenant protections -$1 billion for housing capital The proposal’s zoning reforms include scaling back parking mandates for new buildings and accelerating the office-to-residential conversions. The City Planning Commission will review the proposal and pass the plan on to the Council for a final vote next month. The Clean Slate Act was passed in 2023, but just took effect this week. The law automatically seals certain criminal records after a required waiting period – three years for a misdemeanor and eight years for a felony – provided the individual has maintained a clean record and is no longer on probation or parole. The act aims to give New Yorkers a clean slate and access to additional employment and housing opportunities after they’ve paid their debt to society and gone years without an additional offense. Some records are not eligible for sealing. For example individuals with pending criminal charges, who are required to register as a sex offender, or who have been convicted of a class A felony are ineligible to have their records sealed under the Clean Slate Act. For employers, this means that any sealed records will not be accessible when running a background check on a potential employee.
