As we continue honoring National Social Work month, today we highlight Kristine Nightingale, Program Manager for the Youth and Young Adult Group Residence program on Winter Island! Kristine was drawn to the social work field after learning about the many environmental factors that can influence a person's life, particularly as it relates to young people's development. She began volunteering at Plummer Youth Promise as a life skills mentor and transitioned to Residential Counselor in 2020. She is currently completing her Master's in Social Work (MSW) from Salem State University and is the President of the International Social Work Club, an international network fostering meaningful exchanges among students and experts from both academic and practical fields. From Rwanda to Latvia and now to Switzerland, Kristine takes her passion for social work around the world! Kristine is traveling to Zurich to compare the challenges and solutions around social issues like homelessness, mental health, substance use, racism, and more between the U.S. and Switzerland. This will include the opportunity to visit and support a local organization working with those affected by homelessness. A young hero and his magical best friend Trouble the Dog ?? came to visit us! Darius Noonan is a former youth in foster care who received a stuffed dog, Trouble, from his social worker. Trouble helped Darius when he felt scared and lonely. Now Darius is sharing this magic with the youth in foster care at Plummer! This incredible young man raised money to donate these stuffed dogs to our organization and we are so inspired by his generosity! Spring is almost here! But even on colder days, the youth will be staying warm thanks to the handmade quilts generously donated by the Garden City Quilting Guild. This group of talented quilters meet together at church and create quilts of all different colors and sizes. They even have an i-Spy style quilt with treasures hidden in the patchwork! In honor of National Social Work month, we're highlighting the incredible social workers on our team! Today we feature MaryLuz Arling, LICSW, Foster Care Program Director for over 11 years. When asked why she became a social worker, she shared, " In high school I took a psychology course and would read vignettes that portrayed the emotional struggles that so many of us go through. I became frustrated with hearing how difficult it was for people to access effective help to cope with life. Without hesitation, I knew being a social worker was my calling and I was even specific enough to know I wanted to be an Adoption Social Worker. My first experience in social work was working in a dual-diagnose program with seniors. I didn’t feel like this was my niche. When I found a job posting for an adoption social worker, I worried that I might not be fully qualified. I took the leap and applied anyway! Shortly after, I was shocked to receive an interview request! Really, the rest is history. Sometimes the social work field can be hard to work in as I hear about the many struggles and hardships that people face. Yet, to me, seeing a positive outcome for youth is my driving force to keep going. I am grateful for all my years in the field. As a program director at Plummer for over 11 years, my team keeps me motivated to strive to do better. Being able to witness their growth has been the most rewarding experience of my career!
