Steamfitters Local 342 was chartered into the United Association of Journeyman and Apprentices in the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada in 1914. It began with twenty-one charter members who sought a shorter work-day, wage increases, and better working conditions. Those original members endured adverse conditions that are well documented in the history of the American Labor Movement. What started as a small band of steamfitters grew to encompass workers in the welding, pipeline, refrigeration, and plumbing trades. The acquisition of these skilled trades came by way of mergers with other UA locals, including Plumbers Local 444 in 1994, and helped to establish one of the strongest examples of a combination local. We are proud of our humble beginnings and strive to maintain the highest standard of excellence.

Our very own Steamfitter Apprentice Nikí Brown made the cover of USA Today! A special edition issue was published in celebration of Black History month, highlighting the successes black women are finding in the trades. In the article, Nikí states, “’I feel like welding found me. There’s just over two weeks left until the Apprenticeship Application period closes for this year. As a reminder, please be aware of the following minimum requirements when applying: ? Proof of Age is required at the time of application. The Applicant must be at least 18 years of age or will be 18 years of age by January 2025. You must upload one of the following with the application: - valid driver’s license OR - valid state issued Identification Card OR - Birth Certificate with photo ID, OR - passport ? Proof of High School Diploma or Legal Equivalent: You must upload one of the following with the application: - High School Diploma OR - G.E.D. OR - Officially Signed Transcripts OR - current official transcripts if still a high school senior ?
