SWITZERLAND TO BUILD ITS FIRST EVER MECHANICAL TEXTILE RECYCLING PLANT: Switzerland is set to open its first industrial textile recycling centre, a project led by clothing collector Tell-Tex AG in partnership with S?ntis Textiles. The facility, located in St. Margrethen, will automate the sorting of used #textiles by material and colour, aiming to keep resources within Switzerland and support a circular economy. Currently, much of Switzerland’s used clothing is exported to sorting centres abroad, including Asia and Eastern Europe, but this is expected to change with the centre's launch in 2026. The recycled textiles from the plant will be repurposed into yarn and other reusable materials, potentially reducing waste and reliance on exports. The project represents a 40-million-franc (42.6m Euro) investment and is expected to create 45 to 60 new jobs. It also aims to address the recycling of industrial textiles, such as uniforms and fabrics from hospitals and hotels, which currently lack a clear processing system. Mechanical textile recycling has a long, rich history but much of the limelight in recent years has been on chemical recycling as - in theory - this allows the recycling of textiles without the degradation of fibres. Progress in this area has faltered of late, however. With so much emphasis on waste management and the circular economy it will be interesting to see if other European countries follow Switzerland's route and try manage this process within.
