This is why it isn’t easy to grow a vegan brand in food service- because food service workers don’t seem to understand what vegan means. Sometimes it means, “I’m asking for vegan cheese because I’m allergic to dairy.” Not taking that seriously has consequences but it’s easier to not offer an option at all than to educate your staff.

Am I asking too much ? Are my expectations too high? This evening we went out for a family meal. Naturally I ordered the only Vegan pizza option. When mine arrived, the cheese looked suspiciously dairy like- bearing in mind that the Vegan option was supposed to be garlic oil and basil with no mention of a vegan cheese. After getting my family to check, I called over the writer who confirmed it was indeed dairy. After an apology, he arranged for another pizza to be made for me. I know I'm not alone when I say that I had pretty much lost not only my appetite, but also my trust at this point. Most Vegans and Vegetarians have all experienced this. The mediocre pizza arrived, it was dry, flavourless and a poor vegan option. Now I don't want to be that moaning Vegan .... but if I had an allergy, they could have killed me ! I know that mistakes happen.... however, after already getting the drinks order wrong, and asking about dietary needs, you would have thought they would have ensured that the rest of the service was seamless.
