Game Changer: A Study Debunks Video Games' Efficacy in Schizophrenia ?? Our very own Santiago Castiello de Obeso, uncover surprising findings in studies about mental health treatment. ?? In this #GabuEvidenceNugget, we wanted to know whether video games are an effective treatment for people with schizophrenia. Our team reports results from a high-quality evidence study: a Cochrane Review. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of multiple randomized controlled trials (RCT). Video games are used everywhere by anyone, and in scientific literature, they are often used as control groups, but sometimes they are tested as interventions themselves. In Roberts et al.'s (2021) review, the authors searched all RCTs where video games alone as an additional intervention were used to improve symptoms of people with schizophrenia. They found seven RCTs with 468 participants and they pooled the results (meta-analysis). They found no difference between video games and cognitive remediation (cognitive enhancement tasks implemented via computer) in general functioning scores, social functioning, mental state symptoms, or quality of life. However, cognitive remediation was superior in improving cognitive function. We believe these results unveil two things: i) there is an area of opportunity for investing in studies to test the efficacy of video games in both people with a psychiatric condition and the general population, and ii) so far, video games and tailored cognitive interventions delivered by a computer seems to be equality effective to treat people with schizophrenia. The latter allows video games to be used as clinical interventions. However, addiction potential should be considered and studied further to determine the exact and evidence-based use of video games.
