I started designing Ellie with a couple elements I knew we could rely on: o Insights from our design research with nurses, facility managers, patients, architects, and designers—all who are steeped in experience and work tirelessly to improve the experience. * o The soothing, natural contours inspired by the flow and erosion of nature. Looking at this image now, I’m truly grateful for Kwalu's dedication to preserving and serving the design throughout the development process. (The insight-driven features are something to be experienced, so I hope you stop by the Kwalu booth and get the Ellie experience! Prior to our work with Kwalu, we already knew that A&D loved Kwalu's Protea--it is warm to the touch, and withstands the most aggressive healthcare cleaners while bringing in the visual warmth of a natural material. Our design intent was to use Protea for as many high-touch interfaces as possible. After walking through the factory and seeing the process, it became almost equally important to design in a way that would exploit their unique moulding process and allow the fluid material process to achieve forms rightly sculpted for a human, ergonomic relationship. From a design standpoint, we pushed them, and from a manufacturing standpoint, it was as if they had ben waiting for the challenge! A great partnership and I am excited to share Ellie, the first in Play Orbit Studio's collection for Kwalu, at HCD, Indianapolis, October 5-8. See ya there!
