“There is a reason you don’t see paper, glass, or metal polluting our streets. It’s because the market has assigned a value to that material,” says Nanette Medved-Po, Founder of PCX Markets and PCX Solutions.? “We need to do that for plastic.” At PCX, we believe that businesses have an incredible opportunity to help end plastic pollution. Through plastic credits, companies can take responsibility for their plastic footprint, help fund waste management infrastructure, and incentivize the collection of even low-value plastics that otherwise wind up in streets, rivers, and oceans in developing countries. Join us in our mission to accelerate the transition to a circular economy - and build a future where no plastic ends up in nature. Feeling hopeful at the start of the day's discussion on a global #plasticstreaty at #INC5 in Busan. There's many roadblocks and challenges - but there's also a sense of urgency among many here this week. The time for action is now. We need a strong treaty that addresses both upstream reduction and downstream pollution - and facilitates new sources of funding that deliver benefits beyond the traditional return on investment, such as increased wages for the informal waste sector and socioeconomic empowerment of disadvantaged communities at the epicentre of the #plasticwaste crisis. #circulareconomy #stopplasticpollution

A new global mechanism for funding to tackle plastic pollution will take many years. “In the meantime, plastic credits offer a tangible instrument that is available now. We have over 250 mln kilos of capacity that can be deployed today.” Stefanie Beitien, Managing Director of our sister organization PCX Solutions, talks with Carbon Pulse about the role credits can play in supporting the global #plasticstreaty that UN negotiators are finalizing this week in Busan. We had a full house on Sunday for our INC5 side event,?“EPR, Loans & Plastic Credits: Financing Solutions for Indonesia and Other Emerging Markets" - and we've come away super energized by the discussion! We thank all attendees from multilaterals, companies, NGOs, and civil society organizations for their interest in innovative financing solutions to address the plastic pollution crisis in Indonesia and other Emerging Markets. Some key takeaways from the event: ?? The financing gap in Emerging Markets is particularly acute. Indonesia needs $18 billion to reduce ocean plastic leakage and achieve a circular economy.? ?? EPR can play a critical role in tackling plastic pollution - but laws need to be stringent. ADB's policy linked loan is one example of how regulations can be strengthened and supported. ?? Bundling zero-interest loans and plastic credits can accelerate impact by enabling SMEs to scale Indonesia’s recycling sector.? ?? Plastic credits can generate immediate impact while incentivizing much needed investments in infrastructure and alternatives. Thank you to our esteemed speakers, Rofi Alhanif from the Coordinating Ministry of Food in Indonesia, Bunga Karnisa Goib from Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia,?Roger Joseph (Rocky) Guzman from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Adijoyo Prakoso from Duitin Indonesia, for sharing valuable insights. Thank you to Simon Baldwin of SecondMuse and Stefanie Beitien of PCX Solutions, our collaborators on the Plastic Recovery Catalyst Program. We look forward to the positive impact that this will bring to Indonesia and its local recycling sector. Stay tuned for upcoming updates on the program. ?#EPR #PlasticCredits #EndPlasticPollution #CircularEconomy #Indonesia #INC5 Sebastian DiGrande

"The world will be 'unable to cope' with the sheer volume of plastic waste a decade from now unless countries agree to curbs on production." Norway's Anne Beathe Tvinnereim highlights this urgent issue as nations meet in Busan for UN talks on a global plastics treaty. Without action, plastic use could triple by 2060, with sub-Saharan Africa and Asia seeing the largest increases. Half of this waste could end up in landfills, with less than 20% recycled. Join PCX in our mission to help keep plastic waste out of nature. Visit www.pcxmarkets.com to learn more. https://lnkd.in/g47yKDzh
