?? Highlighting Voices: Our Oral History Interview with Saundra Morene ?? We recently had the privilege of conducting an oral history interview with Saundra Morene of the JACKSONVILLE GULLAH GEECHEE NATION COMMUNITY DEV CORP. During our conversation, Saundra shared her experiences with the historic LaVilla neighborhood in Jacksonville, offering a deeply personal perspective on its cultural significance and evolution over time. Her insights into LaVilla’s vibrant heritage, its challenges, and its enduring legacy remind us of the importance of amplifying underrepresented voices and documenting the stories that shape our communities. Stay tuned as we continue to share stories like this, celebrating the power of community, culture, and storytelling! #OralHistory #GullahGeechee #LaVilla #CulturalHeritage #CommunityVoices #Storytelling

关于我们
Helping Communities + Culture Flourish Our purpose is to elevate the voices and culture of those traditionally excluded from urban planning, land use and zoning. We inspire community-led, history-based planning solutions so that equitable outcomes are possible. We know telling the inclusive history of our communities is a critical component of all planning efforts. How can we help your community? We work with you to highlight and promote community history and heritage, elevate community members’ knowledge in land use and urban planning projects, and strategize and plan for your community’s future. We blend practical planning, historic preservation, and land use strategies with a commitment to working with people.

Today we honor Indigenous Peoples' Day. "There are no set rules on how one should appreciate the day, said Van Heuvelen, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe from South Dakota. It's all about reflection, recognition, celebration and an education. It can be a day of reflection of our history in the United States, the role Native people have played in it, the impacts that history has had on native people and communities, and also a day to gain some understanding of the diversity of Indigenous peoples," she said." From: https://zurl.co/Up4E South Dakota was the first state to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day in 1989. ??Our LaVilla Heritage Resources Survey work with Plusurbia Design in Jacksonville, FL continues to make progress. We recently solidified a final property list of structures, bridges, archaeological sites and resource groups for documentation within the neighborhood's original boundaries. This map illustrates the negative impact of urban renewal on what was once Jacksonville's densest urban neighborhood. #historicpreservation #culturalheritage #blackhistory #urbanplanning #floridapreservation #floridahistory

?? We are thrilled that our Florida Chitlin' Circuit Historic Research and Documentation Project won an award at the Preservation on Main Street conference this summer! This is the first project that got CPC started. The Florida Chitlin' Circuit Research and Documentation Project was completed through a partnership of several Florida Main Street communities and funded by a Florida Division of Historical Resources grant. We took a deep dive into the history of the Circuit in Florida and venues in Jacksonville, St. Petersburg, Fort Pierce, and Eatonville. Thanks to the graphic design skills of Karen Essic, this report really came together and we are so proud of it. Check it out when you get a chance! You can download it at the corresponding website: https://zurl.co/Jc7y Thank you Florida Trust for Historic Preservation for the award recognition! #historicpreservation #culturalheritage #historicinterpretation #placekeeping #publichistory #blackhistory #history #urbanplanning #floridahistory
