We were honored to be represented by Bram Gunther at a panel discussion titled Toward a New Land Ethic, which was presented by LTV and ChangeHampton. Also present were Edwina von Gal, Paul Munoz of EcoHarmony, Gail Pellet & Stephen van Dam from ChangeHampton. Biddle Duke moderated a panel of landscapers, policymakers, and landscape designers to discuss ways to move toward a healthier, more sustainable relationship with our home landscapes. “What is a new land ethic?” The idea, Stephen van Dam, the president of ChangeHampton, is “to disrupt our relationship with the natural world and overcome and change our attitude towards nature — the idea that we need to dominate nature. We need to disrupt that.” Many thanks to Christopher Gangemi and The East Hampton Star for the great article about the panel discussion. #planitwild #rewilding #lesslawnmorelife #biodiversity David R. This fall, Siwanoy Elementary School will introduce a 150-square-foot microforest, a pioneering project that will engage students in forest stewardship while enhancing local biodiversity. We are thrilled to be partnering with Siwanoy Elementary School and the Siwanoy PTA. Siwanoy students will have the opportunity to participate in planting native species, learn the fundamentals of forest stewardship, and track the project’s long-term effects by collecting data on increases in biodiversity, stormwater capture, and carbon sequestration over time. Ever faced a neighbor's disapproving glance at your native plant garden? Lorrie Otto, the founder of the natural landscaping movement, has some thoughts. In her timeless piece, "What Do I Tell My Neighbor?" Otto challenges us to rethink what we apologize for: not for our vibrant, life-supporting gardens, but for the lack of awareness about the value of native plants. ? Instead of feeling pressured by judgments, Otto suggests we be "sorry" for the real losses—like the decline of songbirds, butterflies, and the quiet beauty of nature's diversity. Embrace your native garden as a quiet act of rebellion against the "thoughtless landscaping amoeba." Ditch the turf and get back to nature! Ginger Zee We were thrilled to be a part of Ginger Zee's segment on rewilding your yard yesterday morning on Good Morning America on ABC! The whole Plan it Wild team enjoyed Ginger's thoughtful and experienced questions. She has been rewilding for ages and has the native plant knowledge to prove it! We are so grateful to Ginger, Daniel Manzo, Matthew Glasser, and everyone at Good Morning America and ABC for bringing this story to the mainstream! Rewilding is for everyone! #rewilding #lesslawnmorelife #nativeplants #planitwild #biodiversity

Many thanks to the Friends of Rye Nature Center and Jaxson Mack for inviting us to speak about our growing experience and our approach to building Micro Forests. It was an honor to connect with practitioners about restoring open and unused urban areas such as pocket parks, schools, and yards back to ecological health. This has been an increasing focus of our work and we love to share the learnings! #microforests #planitwild #biodiversity #nativeplants #rewilding #lesslawnmorelife #bringbackhabitat

Often ESG, sustainability and climate change programs are disappointing. Perhaps an investment in a tree growing operation thousands of miles away that is little more than greenwashing. Or a promise to focus on green investing when their portfolio is little changed from a decade ago. So when we see actual, positive results from a sustainability campaign, it is worth amplifying and applauding.?And sometimes the biggest outcomes are heralded by the smallest of creatures. Such is the case with Con Edison, which has discovered a regionally rare bee species on its transmission corridors, a direct result of the company’s commitment to enhance the diversity of plant, insect and animal life on the more than 8,000 acres of property it owns and maintains. Ecological habitat improvements like that at more companies on corporate campuses throughout the region would make real progress towards improving the community, the planet and reaching climate change and biodiversity goals. Plan It Wild is playing a role in Con Ed’s biodiversity action plan. Among other things, Con Ed?is our first corporate partner to adopt the Wildr EcoSystem? as a way to measure the return of biodiversity in yards, campuses, commercial, and public spaces. https://lnkd.in/dCNyNGKn Thank you to Venetia Lannon and to our awesome team including Desiree Narango, Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Bram Gunther and Jeffrey Rothfeder. #savethebees #PollinatorConservation #PlanitWild #NativePlants #BeeFriendly #WildlifeHabitat #PollinatorHealth #PlantNative #Biodiversity #SustainableLandscaping #ProtectPollinators

Thank you, Andrew, our great chairman of the board at the Natural Areas Conservancy. We need to ecologically restore all types of land, big and small in the larger metropolitan areas where most Americans live. Join Plan it Wild in this effort.
We are in the midst of both climate change and a wave of mass extinction of non-human species on this planet. Bram Gunther, co-founder of New York’s Natural Areas Conservancy (and a veteran of the Giuliani and Bloomberg Adminstrations) is trying to do something about it with a Westchester-based venture called PLANitWILD. About 30 percent of the continental U.S. is currently devoted to lawns, far larger than the 6 percent devoted to parks. And more than 80 percent of the land in the eastern U.S. is privately owned. The idea is to “rewild” at least a portion of these areas with native species of wildflowers and other plants in order to sustain our native flora and the insects and other animals that depend on it. PLANitWILD will do site visits for both individuals and municipalities, assess the current plantings, and determine a course of action that both preserves our ecosystem and looks great at the same time. Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in more info.

New in our series today: American conservation has traditionally focused on our unique wild landscapes, but the majority of Americans live in metropolitan areas now. How can we serve the growing need for urban green spaces? Micro Forests, based on a design by Japanese landscape architect and botanist Akira Miyawaki, bring the essential water, air, and biodiversity benefits of forests into the city — as well as nearly instantaneous beauty in areas with little green space.
