Introducing a Wildfire Burn Severity and Vegetation Impact Visualization Tool for LA Wildfires in Los Angeles are becoming more frequent and intense, leaving lasting impacts on ecosystems and communities. To drive post-fire resilience and restoration, we’ve developed an interactive application that allows users to visualize burn severity, fire progression, pre-fire vegetation types, and invasive species presence—critical data for rebuilding landscapes strategically. Explore it here - https://lnkd.in/db-CmgPm This tool empowers land managers, researchers, and local communities to: ?? Understand which vegetation types were most affected by wildfires. ?? Identify areas near Altadena with invasive species which are fire hazards. ??? Track fire progression and map burn severity. By integrating satellite data and ecological insights, this platform supports targeted restoration strategies, ensuring that fire-impacted areas recover with resilience. Feel free to DM me for any questions! This project is part of PlanetSapling's LocalSolve community—a global network of geospatial data scientists and enthusiasts dedicated to replicable, impactful climate data projects. If you’re interested in leveraging geospatial data for climate action, join us in scaling solutions that drive real-world impact. ?? Best Sources for Accessing Wildfire Satellite Data Wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity, making timely and accurate data critical for monitoring, response, and recovery. Whether you’re a researcher, emergency responder, or data scientist, knowing where to access satellite fire data is essential. Here’s a breakdown of the best sources for finding wildfire datasets like VIIRS, MODIS, GOES, Sentinel-2, and Landsat. 1?? NASA FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Management System) ?? Datasets Available: MODIS (1km), VIIRS (375m) ?? Best for: Near-real-time active fire detection, global fire monitoring ??Provides fire hotspot locations within 3 hours of a satellite overpass. You can access interactive maps, fire shapefiles, and API downloads for use in GIS and Python workflows. ???? If you're interested in a deep dive on mapping wildfires using satellite data, join PlanetSapling's upcoming FREE LIVE SESSION on March 5! ?? - Register here?- https://lnkd.in/dSYjRY4h 2?? NOAA CLASS (Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System) ?? Datasets Available: VIIRS (JPSS-1, NOAA-20), GOES-16/17 ?? Best for: Historical fire data, advanced fire radiative power (FRP) analysis ??GOES and VIIRS fire data, ideal for studying historical wildfire trends. More detailed than FIRMS, but requires downloading raw data. 3?? Google Earth Engine (GEE) ?? Datasets Available: MODIS, VIIRS, Sentinel-2, Landsat ?? Best for: Large-scale wildfire trend analysis, burn severity mapping ?? GEE allows cloud-based processing of long-term fire data without downloading massive files. Ideal for remote sensing analysis and visualizations. 4?? NASA Worldview ?? Datasets Available: MODIS, VIIRS, GOES ?? Best for: Interactive wildfire tracking, near real-time imagery ?? A visual dashboard for tracking fires globally. You can overlay MODIS/VIIRS hotspots, smoke plumes, and thermal anomalies for a quick situational overview. 5?? Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) and EFFIS ?? Datasets Available: Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, MODIS ?? Best for: EU-focused fire emergency response, burn area mapping ?? Detailed fire maps and emergency response products, mainly for Europe. 6?? NOAA Hazard Mapping System (HMS) ?? Datasets Available: VIIRS, MODIS, GOES ?? Best for: Smoke detection, fire perimeters, rapid updates ?? HMS integrates multiple satellite sources to provide comprehensive wildfire and smoke plume tracking for North America. ?? Best Source for Your Needs: ? Need real-time wildfire tracking? → NASA FIRMS, NOAA HMS, NASA Worldview ? Want historical fire data? → NOAA CLASS ? Mapping burn scars? → Sentinel-2, Landsat via Google Earth Engine ? Monitoring smoke transport? → GOES via NOAA HMS ?? Pro Tip: Use Google Earth Engine to combine multiple datasets and automate analysis at scale! Which sources do you use the most? Drop a comment! ?? #geospatial #gis #wildfires #remotesensing #losangeles #satellitedata #datascience #nasa

?? Top 5 Satellite Datasets for Mapping Wildfires Wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense, making real-time monitoring and accurate mapping critical. Fortunately, satellites provide powerful datasets to detect, track, and assess wildfire impacts. Here’s a breakdown of the best satellite datasets for wildfire monitoring, based on spatial and temporal resolution: 1?? VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) ?? Resolution: ~375 m ? Update Frequency: 6-hourly (SNPP + NOAA-20) ?? Best for: Near-real-time active fire detection, fire front tracking VIIRS provides higher-resolution fire detection than MODIS and is widely used for hotspot identification, burned area mapping, and night-time fire tracking. (?? If you're interested in a deep dive on mapping wildfires using satellite data, join PlanetSapling's upcoming FREE LIVE SESSION on March 5! ?? - Register here - https://lnkd.in/dwMctKSR) 2?? MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) ?? Resolution: 1km (thermal) ? Update Frequency: Daily ?? Best for: Long-term fire trends, smoke tracking MODIS has been a workhorse for wildfire monitoring since 2000. It provides historical fire records and is crucial for global wildfire analysis, though it has lower spatial resolution compared to VIIRS. 3?? GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) ?? Resolution: 2km ? Update Frequency: Every 5-10 minutes ?? Best for: Real-time wildfire tracking, rapid fire spread detection GOES is the fastest for wildfire detection due to its high temporal resolution, making it ideal for emergency response teams. While it lacks finer spatial detail, its rapid updates help track fire evolution in near real-time. 4?? Sentinel-2 (MultiSpectral Instrument - MSI) ?? Resolution: 10m (optical), 20m (SWIR) ? Update Frequency: 5 days ?? Best for: Burned area mapping, vegetation recovery, detailed fire scars Sentinel-2 is not ideal for active fire detection but excels at post-fire damage assessments due to its high spatial resolution. The SWIR bands (B11, B12) are great for burn severity analysis. 5?? Landsat-8/9 (Operational Land Imager - OLI & Thermal Infrared Sensor - TIRS) ?? Resolution: 30m (visible & SWIR), 100m (thermal) ? Update Frequency: 16 days (individual), 8 days (constellation) ?? Best for: Historical fire trends, detailed burn scars, vegetation impact Landsat’s long-term record makes it perfect for historical wildfire analysis and burn severity mapping. Though its revisit time is longer, it provides excellent detail for post-fire recovery studies. Which dataset should you use? ? Need real-time fire tracking? → GOES ?? ? Want near-real-time fire detection? → VIIRS, MODIS ?? ? Mapping burned areas in detail? → Sentinel-2, Landsat #geospatial #gis #satellitedata #wildfires #remotesensing #datascience
