In San Ramón, Bolivia - an area known for its biodiversity and tropical climate - the planetGOLD project is partnering with women miners to provide training in gastronomy, helping them to incorporate cooking businesses as an alternative source of income for themselves and their families. The course is grounded in the Manq'a approach of using locally sourced ingredients. The planetGOLD programme works in partnership with governments, the private sector, and artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities in countries around the world to significantly improve the production practices and work environment of artisanal and small-scale miners. By working to close the financing gap, supporting formalization, raising awareness, and connecting mining communities with mercury-free technology and formal markets, the programme aims to demonstrate a pathway to cleaner and more efficient small-scale gold mining practices that benefit everyone, from mine to market. Our Mission: To make small-scale gold mining safer, cleaner, and more profitable Our Vision: A clean global supply of gold from small-scale miners ↑ For updates follow our page ↑ Supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), planetGOLD is led by the United Nations Environment Programme and implemented in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Conservation International. The programme supports countries’ commitments under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. ↓ Learn more about us and sign up for our email list via our website ↓

Great to see issues of responsible mining raised at COP16 Colombia — and to see the perspectives of miners and Indigenous leaders centered in this discussion. Thanks to Patrick Schein for this reflection ??
Yesterday we had a very productive discussion at COP16 Colombia thanks to our excellent moderator, Gina D'Amato. Thanks to the Colombian Ministry of the Environment and its Vice-Minister Mauricio Cabrera, we were able to expose the situation in the beautiful Colombian pavilion. These are my takeaways: -?From the miners (not the criminal ones): We have been mining in our territory for ages. We want to continue mining, but on our scale and at our pace. We do not want others to mine our territory. We want to mine responsibly. We need our governments to adapt the legislation to our realities. For example, one of the communities had the right to mine, but not the right to market their gold, forcing them to sell at a discount to underground buyers. - From the OECD: After explaining the objectives of their Mineral Due Diligence Guidance, Luca Maiotti reiterated the need for companies to engage with ASM. - From UNEP, Sitki Ersin Esen reaffirmed the importance of the ASM sector and UNEP's involvement, mainly through the planetGOLD programme focused on mercury elimination, ASM formalisation, bancarisation and market access. - As a buyer and refiner I explained that adopting responsible mining standards and tracing the gold from mine to market is costly for low-volume mines and that the market was not ready to pay for it because they have a cheap alternative with so-called 'recycled gold' which in fact is pure greenwashing. I recommended lowering the cost of this responsible ASM gold through innovative instruments such as impact credits, as recommended at? #COP16. I also urged governments to incentivise the responsible ASM sector by reducing royalties and barriers to mining permits. Finally, I reiterated the importance of academics following the sector to assess and communicate the impact of responsible ASM to the market and sponsors. Thanks to Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) to have organised this panel discussion. Great #COP16

On 24 October, United Nations Human Rights organized an in-person dialogue during #COP16Colombia to address the need for joint action to protect the Amazon from the harmful effects of #mercury and to support biodiversity conservation through a #HumanRights lens. The dialogue brought together representatives of civil society from countries such as Colombia, Brazil and Peru to share experiences, needs and opportunities in connection with mercury pollution, #biodiversity and human rights, in line with #KMGBF, which emphasizes a rights-based approach to environmental protection. The Secretariat of the #MinamataConvention provided an overview of the work of actors under the treaty, with a special focus on Indigenous Peoples, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (#ASGM) and vulnerable ecosystems.
