We love reporting on community-led action. Out latest story brought us to Detroit's Poletown East, which has suffered from pollution from industrial facilities in the area. But resident Andrew “Birch” Kemp wanted to bring more trees to the neighborhood he's called home for two decades. He left his full-time teaching job and launched Arboretum Detroit alongside his wife in 2019. “Something clicked where it was like if we had the nonprofit, we could make public space, we could protect the land, we could plant trees that will be safe from development and create something beautiful for the neighborhood,” he said. Last month, Kemp cut the ribbon on Circle Forest, an urban reforestation project that aims to encourage city dwellers to sit still, watch birds, or gather with others in nature. Read about the project's impact on the community:

The results of the 2024 election underscore the vital connection between American democracy and independent journalism. Grassroots journalism's role is more crucial than ever, especially in health and environmental reporting. Communities nationwide are losing reliable news sources, resulting in lower voter participation and unchecked power. Planet Detroit remains a steadfast watchdog for health and the environment in Detroit and Michigan, delivering accurate, nuanced, and on-the-ground reporting. To sustain its vital work, Planet Detroit has launched an end-of-year fundraising campaign aiming to raise $60,000 by year-end. Supporting local journalism is essential for holding power accountable and ensuring critical issues receive the attention they deserve. Contributions will significantly impact not just the newsroom, but the community, the environment, and democracy as a whole. Support the mission to keep environmental journalism alive and impactful by contributing to Planet Detroit today. https://buff.ly/4hJcpoj
