Honored to have moderated a session at the 1st Institute for Planetary Health Forum at Yonsei University this week. A huge thank you to Yonsei for their leadership in advancing the planetary health agenda — bringing together diverse voices to tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time. Our discussions explored critical themes, including health system decarbonization and sustainable diets. The conversations underscored the co-benefits of these approaches, reinforcing that what’s good for the planet is also good for our health!

?? Air pollution is one of the greatest public health threats of our time, contributing to 7 million premature deaths annually. Driven by fossil fuel combustion, it not only harms human health but also exacerbates the climate crisis—creating a dangerous feedback loop that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, especially children. The Clean Air, Healthy Lives policy roadmap offers actionable solutions for health ministries—particularly in low- and middle-income countries—to integrate air quality management into healthcare systems. The roadmap highlights: ? How leveraging data can improve patient care and inform policymaking ? The power of community-led advocacy in driving regulatory reforms ? Strategies for integrating air pollution responses within national and local health systems By strengthening health leadership, investing in infrastructure, and engaging communities, we can ensure cleaner air and healthier lives for all. ? “Clean air is not a 'nice to have' - it’s a public health necessity, and the profound and far-reaching health impacts of air pollution demand an urgent, coordinated, and strategic response from governments worldwide”, said Shweta Narayan, roadmap author and Campaign Lead at the Global Climate and Health Alliance Campaign, which is made up of over 200 health professional and health civil society organisations and networks from around the world. “To address this crisis effectively, governments must reframe air pollution not merely as a challenge of emissions reductions or technology, but as a critical and preventable threat to the public health and well-being of people, which requires urgent, health-centered action to protect lives and communities. The solutions already exist - governments cannot afford to dither on taking action”. #airpollution #WHO #health

PhD, MSc, BSc, FRSA; Author of Designing Regenerative Cultures, RSA Bicentenary Medal for Regenerative Design 2021 recipient, catalyst, mentor, educator, activist, speaker, bioregional weaver, regenerative agroforestry

It has been a long time since I have bothered to write for academic, peer-reviewed publications, but for a number of reasons I am now working on an academic paper and so started re-reading some of the papers I published about my PhD research nearly 20 years ago. This one, I wrote for a conference in Bariloche, Argentina, in 2006. In the comments there is a video of a very young and still not that practiced of a public speaker me in a room at the famous Hotel Lao Lao, presenting the paper as a freshly minted Dr. Wahl. Fascinating to see how much was there already and also to see what aspects evolved and what I would frame differently today. The importance of scale-linking design, a community-lead bioregional approach, design as the way to realign with life: From the abstract: "Systemic health is a scale-linking, emergent property of healthy interactions and relationships within complex dynamic systems. The health of human beings, societies, ecosystems and the planetary life support system is fundamentally interconnected and interdependent. Sustainability, as a process of community-based learning, is expressed through design that is informed by ecological principles and adapted to local, regional and global limits and opportunities. In general, sustainable design is synergetic, symbiotic, scale-linking, salutogenic and sacred. There is a need to integrate ecological, social, cultural, economic and psychological (spiritual) considerations into a flexible and responsive strategy to facilitate the sustainability transition. Design for human and planetary health requires a transdisciplinary dialogue aiming for appropriate solutions and community-based visions of sustainability." #design #bioregional #salutogenesis #sustainability #planetaryhealth Planetary Health Alliance Design Council Systemic Design Labs ?ETH Zurich

People and planet will ultimately share the same fate???? Human rights, environmental health, and the conservation of biodiversity are inextricably linked.?Too many of us remain physically, mentally and emotionally disconnected from the earth, from the sources of our water and food, and from the reality of how deeply interconnected we are with each other and our planet. ??We all have the right to a healthy and safe environment, free from pollution and degradation. This includes access to clean water, breathable air, and natural resources that support life. The well-being of marginalized communities, often on the frontlines of environmental degradation, is deeply impacted by the state of our planet. ?? Our environment is the foundation of our survival, and its health directly impacts our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to promoting sustainable practices, ensuring environmental health is essential for the future of humanity. By caring for the planet, we ultimately care for ourselves and future generations. ??The richness of our ecosystems, from forests to oceans, provides invaluable services—clean air, water, food, and medicine—that sustain life on Earth. Conserving biodiversity isn’t just about saving animals or plants; it’s about ensuring the stability of the systems that support human life. These issues don’t exist in silos. Protecting human rights, advocating for a healthy environment, and conserving biodiversity are not just ethical imperatives—they are deeply intertwined. The degradation of one element inevitably impacts the others, creating a cycle that we must break. As professionals, advocates, and individuals, we have the responsibility to make decisions that align with the well-being of both humanity and our planet. ???? It is imperative that, as a global collective, we stand together to protect human rights, promote environmental health, and preserve the beautiful biodiversity on this gorgeous little blue speck, spinning in the vastness of space, that sustains us all.
